Why don't you build a village on top of the world tree
Lesson 5: Competition for orders in the town of Haratra
It was Mr. Komatsu, the president of the Chamber of Commerce, who welcomed me and Richay to the Komatsu Chamber of Commerce.
I greet the sudden appearance of the big man with my heart and thank him for his voice.
"Courtesy of rumors. He's a really good young man. Amane, it's good to see you."
Handshakes are exchanged and passed through the Chamber of Commerce. It looks more like a talking room than a reception room, an environment where the furniture is not so much priced but you can talk calmly.
Would it be a consideration not to constrict me as a young man? Much appreciated.
"Amane, I hear a lot of rumors about you. He said he was a young worker who did his job as an architect while being a demon bug hunter, even though there was no time after adulthood. I've never worked as an architect, and although there's nothing strange about it, it seems that I have a reputation for doing a kind job thinking about the user."
"No, I'm just doing the job exactly as I was asked to do"
"I mean, you're a good listener enough to allow your client to pass on his request without leaking it. So here's one thing, I want you to listen to the request of our Chamber of Commerce"
That's what the Chairman of the Comatsu Chamber of Commerce told me about the request.
"Amane, do you know the town of Haratra?
"Yeah, I wanted to go through it once. Close to the city of Salatin, it's a town with three branches in the lower cloud."
It was a town that I wanted to pass when I visited Mr. Friengs, a master of the Jianqiao family living in Salatin city.
The Chairman of the Comatsu Chamber of Commerce nods and gives out a map.
"If you've visited before, talk fast. In fact, this time, the town of Haratra decided to bridge the fourth branch and create a residential district. The bridge itself is to be asked by the Jianqiao family, but they want to leave the selection of the fourth branch with the intention of the founder of the town of Haratra and the design of the residential district to be built on it to the young architect. Amane, you're the candidate."
"Thank you very much."
But it's pretty big. It's not a job to break into young architects.
"The founders of the town of Haratra want to incorporate young power into the town. I hear that asking young people for this job is also to get the young people in town excited. Amane, I'd love to ask you to design a residential neighborhood that will energize the residents of the town of Haratra."
It is gratifying that it sets the direction in a state that is an abstract order but has not even looked at the site yet.
The Chairman of the Komatsu Chamber of Commerce embarks on himself.
"But this request is going to be an order competition."
Maybe I should say that there is a back to a delicious story, but even if it were an order competition, I would just say that if I lost, it would have been my lack of strength. Naturally I want to make things better for my client, so I'm not going to complain about the order competition or anything.
However, this is the first time I have ever experienced order competition. In the previous life, even if the company would ever embark on an order competition, more people were moving up, not me in the new America.
I'm a little excited.
Chairman Komatsu looks at my face and laughs slightly. Did the excitement propagate?
"Sounds like you could join us, right?
"Absolutely."
"Okay, let's head to the scene. It's a job to make a whole neighborhood. Because it's also a big job as our Chamber of Commerce. I take my own feet. What do you say we leave in two days?
"Two days from now, right? I'll visit you in the morning."
I'll make an appointment with the Chairman of the Comatsu Chamber of Commerce and go outside.
It was from his complexion that Richay apparently remembered his excitement and anxiety about a bigger story than he expected.
"It's a huge story, but were you sure it was okay to take it?
"It's bad for the Comatsu Chamber of Commerce, but as far as I'm concerned, I think it would be an experience to win or lose an order competition. It's the same with Richay."
It is Richay's job to calculate the costs involved, such as ordering building materials and the salaries of artisans. I know I worry about mistakes because when it's a massive story like this one, the amount of money that moves is also huge.
I just can't run away from a much bigger job, and if I go through it here, I'll relieve tensions at a job of the same size later.
"It's okay, we just have to proceed with caution"
Two days later, we joined Mr. Komatsu, the president of the Chamber of Commerce, in front of the Komatsu Chamber of Commerce. We were even at the scene, the town of Haratra.
On the road it was a journey to let animals similar to sheep called coyotes pull their cars. Although coyotes are livestock where hair and meat are also available, the smell is tight. The car was also shaped close to the boxcarriage and was built to keep the smell of coyotes from coming inside.
"Shall we start with the selection of branches?"
It's a branch that builds a residential neighborhood up there. Access to the town of Haratra must be easy, while the load limit is also increased.
The Comatsu Chamber of Commerce has the role of wholesale material. It also helps me calculate the costs needed to plan more than just tagging me as an architect.
The Comatsu Chamber of Commerce seems genuine in wanting a track record just like me, and they wholesale the material for the least profit. It would be a huge appeal point to have a small amount of money to spend on the plan.
Now, there are some candidates around here for a fourth branch in an area where the branches of the world tree are good.
Nature and choice narrowed down to three, taking into account also the height, width, distance and even the inclination of the branches themselves.
I can see the new architects competing for this order. Even when it comes to newcomers, most of them are two hundred or three hundred years older than me.
Not many people are as old as I am to qualify as architects, and even if I were, I'd butt into a massive plan to create one residential district.
But I found a man close to my age in such a new architect. Apparently, he's got eyes on the same branch as me, and he's measuring it with his work buddies.
"Ah..."
Richay, who was walking behind me, lowered his voice.
You noticed Richay's voice, the man and his work buddies face up. My work buddies went to the red short. I didn't know the gender from behind because of Ar, but the face I turned to was obviously that of the woman. He hides his hanging eyes with glasses and long forehead.
"Mr. Calaria......"
Richay, slightly frightened by the fact that the woman turned this way, calls the woman's name.
The man didn't know Richay, tilted his neck and looked at me.
"That, you could be an architect, too?
"Yes."
"I've never seen an architect near my age. I'm Kanes, twenty-nine."
The man who interrupted the survey, Kanes, stands up and approaches me.
"It's Amane. I'm nineteen."
"Almost a tatter. It's so intimate."
It is the perception of age in this world that plus or minus thirty is the margin of error. Life expectancy is not Dada.
Kanes' work buddy, Mr. Calaria, also walks over here with Stasta. It's elegant footwork, but it's agile. I get the illusion that the highly insured hanging eyes are intimidated by the combination.
Mr. Calaria opened her mouth when she stood in front of Richay.
"Mr. Richay, that's an odd encounter. What are you doing here?
"And at work"
Mr. Calaria frowned as Richay stepped back looking completely barometric.
"Work…. Didn't you say before that you wanted to do affairs or accounting in some village or town?
"This architect, Mr. Amane, works in his office."
Richay introduced me, and I'll take it lightly. Mr. Calaria looked at me and frowned even more. Scary.
"Really? Congratulations on your job."
"Calaria, do you know this girl?
When Kanes looked at Richay, Calaria nodded.
"I've met him on several occasions during his academic exams in Yoinsley."
"Is that the exam where Calaria took first place every time"
Yoinsley has a fictitious library, an academic capital and a famous skyscraper. Academic examinations are held on a regular basis and are open to the public for ages under twenty.
They don't do much to get a job because they ask about history, mythology and other knowledge. Probably because it's not a test to measure administrative ability or anything like that.
However, they say that a number of quite difficult questions will be asked about exams for those who are not close to their age and are indiscriminate, and that high scorers will be awarded.
I stand next to Richay. Hi, I hear you're not comfortable with Mr. Calaria, Richay, but what does it have to do with academic exams?
I speak to Kanes to change the subject.
"Will Mr. Kanes also participate in the residential district's plans?
"It's a tatter, so let's not use tough language. Amane's in the order competition, too?
"Yes, you will."
Affirming himself, Kanes grinned.
"Okay, I've been motivated by Russia. I admired my near-age enemies."
"It seems harder to beat the people up there."
Even when it comes to new architects, it is a scary place in this world to have more than a hundred years of practical experience. Well, what a chick for a hundred years compared to people like established in a generation in light of Japanese values, who have been doing this job for five hundred years.
In fact, since about the centenary, there are going to be many people who are blind and change careers or vice versa who succeed in selling their names and becoming independent.
"If I or Amane win this order competition, it's not hard to get out of the rookie frame at once. If you succeed, you'll be the shortest distance to the Bridge family."
I know exactly what Kanes meant. Even I can't relax and unload for 100 years.
Thousands of years is a long life, but my dream is to build a skyscraper. No matter how fast you hurry, the goal is far away.
"Let's work together"
Kanes called me that and went back to the survey. Mr. Calaria will thank us and follow Kanes.
To keep the Kanes out of the way, I'm leaving the scene with Richay for a safe house in Haratra town.
"What kind of relationship do you have with Mr. Calaria?
Turning to the water, Richay looked difficult.
"Mr. Calaria comes first every time in an academic exam, and I'm second or third. That's the relationship."
"Is that why you're so uncomfortable?
"That's not all..."
It wasn't until after I arrived at my lodging that Richay finally said the rest.
Richay opens his mouth after entering the rented room because of reduced costs.
"I'm an orphan, but I remember my parents' faces."
"It's not like you haven't had a parent since you got your mind on it."
They're not like me around there.
I was raised by Hatsumomo when I was in the mood. As much as I only thought Hatsuya was my grandfather in the beginning.
Richay sits on the chair in the room.
"My parents had other worlds when I was ten. They all fell ill. Until then, the three of us lived together."
To listen to Richay's old story, I sit back in the chair across the street. It's a cheap chair filled with un-flyable birds, ram wings that are treated like chickens in this world in a woven cloth of coyote hair. The blades of the ram bird are easy to accumulate static electricity and the tip of the hair stings, so there is only a demand for about the cushioning material of this cheap chair.
Richay's old story continues.
"I was a good parent. I was a respectable parent. That's why I studied, applied for an academic exam, and scored quite a bit. My parents complimented me."
"When you were ten years old and your parents were in the other world, did the academic exams start before that?
Seven years old.
Seven. It was when I started learning bows from Jicha.
It's too early to start vocational training, but in Jicha's case, she planted it so that I could become independent.
Remembering the time, Richay returned to the conversation.
"I got compliments, but I couldn't always be the best. Mr. Calaria was there."
"Did Mr. Calaria take first place like every other time?
Upon confirming Kanes' testimony, Richay nodded deeply.
"Yes, Mr. Calaria is always the best. I'm under it. My parents inspired me. Mr. Calaria is a genius, so he said he had no choice."
"It's..."
Isn't it like saying in the dark that Richay is an ordinary man and no enemy? So far, Mr. Calaria's excellence was out of the group?
Richay laughs bitterly.
"It was really amazing. Mr. Calaria was the second daughter of a certain chamber head, who showed up early in the academic field and was called a talented woman or a genius. I have also made a thirty point difference to me in second place on a 100-point test. There was talk of how to increase the difficulty of the exam because Mr. Calaria would take it, and I was told something like that."
"That's amazing."
I didn't mean to make the exam more difficult by myself. Assuming it's true, I guess the other exams didn't accumulate.
"So I also knew that Mr. Calaria was hostile, and I took my parents' comfort intact. It's just that the encouragement of those parents got into Mr. Calaria's ear."
He said it was when Richay had just turned ten.
Presentation of the results of the academic exam was made, and Richay had twenty points of opening with second-place and first-place Mr. Calaria.
As usual, Richay's parents spared her, and you did your best, and said at the end.
"I knew Mr. Calaria was the best, but he's a genius, so I can't help it."
Mr. Calaria popped up before Richay when Richay tried to snort at the word as usual.
And Mr. Calaria stared at Richay's parents, who were frightened, and said:
"Stop measuring the amount of talent you can't even do. If you're going to encourage me, don't imitate me by setting someone you're not going to rival."
Interrupting Richay's parents' words, Mr. Calaria turns to Richay.
"Let's do each other's best next time. As always, I won't give you the best."
That's all I said, and Mr. Calaria said he left with a flashing reshay.
"- I don't know, cool, dude"
Richay laughs bitterly at my feelings.
"Yes, it was cool. Whatever." As always. "Mr. Calaria has been singling out first place for a long time, but he's also been watching us fight for second and third place. Although the academic exams came to pass after that because my parents were in the other world."
"That was a brilliant way to encourage it. But from what I'm saying, there doesn't seem to be an element of bad consciousness."
You seem a little more comfortable listening to me now, but I don't feel bad about it.
Richay looked a little troubled.
"I told you before that I was going to do administrative accounting in a village or town."
"You said it in a fictional library the first time we met."
"My ability, I thought, was the limit. I can't do administrative accounting for cities that get bigger or skyscrapers."
"Oh, so it's hard to face Mr. Calaria"
In front of giving up a job on a large scale, and admitting the limitations of his talents, he doesn't have the face to let Richay's parents meet Calaria, who cut him off.
I guess that's making me uncomfortable.
I'm a little relieved to find out that it's not like I'm stubborn with Mr. Calaria.
But what do we do? Should I say it or should I say it?
I think it's inappropriate not to say it here after I've been troubled, so I'll tell you what's going to happen.
"I'm still ahead of me, so I didn't think I'd tell you, but I have a dream."
"... dreams?
Richay tilts his neck. Golden hair shakes and glitters in the light from the window.
"Dreams are about building a village, right?
"Ahead. My ultimate goal is to build a third skyscraper after Joynesley to the east and Beautellam to the west."
Richay opens his mouth halfway. He blinked at me and stared at me.
"Seriously?"
"Seriously."
"Are you crazy?"
"Even."
"Ha..."
I got a deep sigh.
Well, this is usually the reaction.
"That's why we're going to develop it as soon as we build a village, and our goal is a skyscraper. I want Richay to do his best as that accountant."
"Even if they say so"
"It's okay, 'cause there's still time."
I don't think we can even develop to the skyscraper in exactly ten or twenty years. It is much more likely that my own life will run out before I become a skyscraper.
"Shall we leave it then?"
Sent ahead. Well, if Richay says that's okay, I won't say anything either.
Rishay gets up to make tea.
"Let's clear up the story in front of us first rather than the story of the future. What are you going to do with the residential plan?
"I've decided on the branches. Make it a slightly curved branch, on the east side of the town of Haratra"
"Why?
Before I answer Lishay's question, I'll explain the situation.
"If there's a point where we're beating other participants, there's a push for the Comatsu Chamber of Commerce. Since construction costs can be significantly reduced, the profit and loss branch can be set low. We have to create one residential area somehow. There are quite a lot of costs that can be reduced"
"The Komatsu Chamber of Commerce is different from other chambers of commerce in that it is looking for merit. I'm not trying to force you to make a profit."
Perhaps there are other architects besides us who have been backed by some chamber of commerce. Still, it would be unlikely when it comes to whether that chamber of commerce only wants merit, like the Comatsu Chamber of Commerce.
"So, east of the town of Haratra, there are commercial districts, starting with the open-air market, and industrial districts that make clothes out of coyote hair. Creating a residential district on the eastern branch will make it easier to get to and from this commercial and industrial district than others"
"That's all I feel weak about."
"I have another one."
Whether you can design a residential neighborhood based on that or not is liver, but we're just going to work on it.
I started designing residential areas with one hand the tea that Richay prepared for me.
Upon submitting the residential district's plan to the town of Haratra, he was summoned to the Haratra town hall to hear more about it as soon as possible.
It's not that I'm special, and the new architects who have submitted plans so far have similarly presented the founders of the town of Haratra to their counterparts, and in some cases the acceptance may be said on the spot, or the plans of the other participants may come out and then again.
That's like a primary interview.
"Aren't you a little nervous?
I'm more nervous about Richay asking.
"If the side suggesting where people live tends to be nervous, the people who live there won't be able to sleep safely"
That's what a professor of architecture in his previous life in college said.
Richay nods at me with a slightly impressed face. Stop it, it's for sale.
"Go ahead, Mr. Amane"
I can call from inside the conference room.
I escaped this good fortune and guilt.
"Excuse me."
When I walked into the conference room, I had a client for some reason.
"Kanes?"
"Amane?"
You didn't know I was coming, and Kanes looks at me wondering, too.
My grandfather, about eight hundred years old, who seems to be the founder of Haratra town, laughed nicely at me and Kanes compared.
"Do you know him? Looks like he's getting old, and I wonder if it's any wonder."
"Yeah, we met during a branch survey here."
It was rather you, the founder of the town of Haratra, who gave me the opportunity to get to know you.
The founder's grandfather saw Kanes.
"I don't know. Amane, listen to your plan."
"Is that good?
"Amane, I hope you're good."
Kanes is interested, too, and he's going to look me in the eye like he expects. Mr. Calaria, who is holding back behind him, was looking at me with such eyes as to measure.
"It's good."
When permission is given, chairs will be available for Kanes and Mr. Calaria. While the chair was being carried in, I stuck the blueprints out on a large board on the wall.
"Hmm..."
I hear a little voice that sounds like a sigh and a mistake, and I steal a look at the founder of the town of Haratra and the ancient ginseng people of the town of Haratra sitting around it.
... what the hell, this air.
I felt uncomfortable. Even though we haven't even talked about the plan yet, the reactions of the founders and ancient ginseng people who have the power to make decisions are not aromatic. It even feels like expectations were halved when blueprints were sticking out.
Nevertheless, there is not a single hand that can be salvaged. If you have such a hand, it has been planned and incorporated into the design since the beginning.
I'm ready to turn to the Founders.
"Now let me talk about the plan. First of all, regarding the selected branches, it is this branch east of the town of Haratra."
Point to selected branches from the map of the town of Haratra and the surrounding area that stuck out on the board.
"Kanes, you have the same branch."
The founder spoke to Kanes.
I thought it might be because I saw where I was measuring it, but was it the same branch?
I'll keep explaining. The first one was the same thing I told Richay at Cheap House.
"This eastern branch is easy to get to and from the commercial district, and the distance is fairly far away, so it is not plagued by the noise caused by the liveliness of the commercial district. Our plan also has the backing of the Comatsu Chamber of Commerce, which can keep the cost of work low. Please check the submitted plan for details."
"Sure, you're keeping it about 30% cheaper than the average plan submitted so far. Though it keeps material costs down, it also doesn't seem like a plan to have less material as far as blueprints go. Why, can I peek at why it can be so cheap?
Asked by the founder's grandfather, the Comatsu Chamber of Commerce explains that this is the first time that the scale of work has been achieved, and that the aim of this participation is to improve the technical skills of employees.
"Hmm. I understand the circumstances of the Comatsu Chamber of Commerce. I was wondering if you could really get the wholesale for this amount, but should I ask Mr Komatsu directly?
"If I have to, I will set up a seat"
"Mm-hmm. Thanks. So that's it for the plan?
"No, let me keep explaining"
"... ho"
The founder's grandfather narrowed his eyes. They just raised expectations a little bit.
I mean, it's better to assume that the other participants have been doing the story so far. Architects who passed the exam, though newcomers. What a natural way to hold back the basics.
I'll show you the blueprints for the residential area.
"The branch you plan to create this residential area has a village just climbing east. It's a village that has a lot of agricultural land, and it also develops its exports with tomb as its spindle."
"Um, I'm also importing it in Haratra town."
Interestingly enough, the founder's grandfather encourages him to go ahead.
"Import route to the town of Haratra, but previously, after moving to the base of the branch, we used a detour to climb more branches with the town of Haratra"
This is a common evil in this world that makes dwellings in world trees. poor access to villages and towns anyway. Even though I can see it in front of my eyes and nose, I actually have to travel to the base or branch of the branch when I try to get a leg, and then I have to go on an itinerary such as climbing a branch to where I'm looking.
If there is a city or skyscraper along the way, we can also use the bridge there to cross branches, but there has never been a bridge available between the town of Haratra and the village.
"If we give the bridge to the branches that make this residential district, transportation costs will be halved. So residential districts were also designed to reach commercial districts without delay with food to be imported from villages."
"I guess that's why there's a boulevard"
"Yes, it is designed to go directly to the bridge to the commercial district on the boulevard that divides the residential district. We also designed to keep the noise of the boulevard from spreading throughout the residential area by making the building that intersects the boulevard higher than others."
I know it's a plain plan, but the profitability is origami.
Reduced labor costs due to the backing of the Komatsu Chamber of Commerce and reduced import costs using bridges connecting branches make it easier to secure food for residents of residential areas while making it easier to reach the entire town of Haratra. Easy to get to and from the industrial district, that is, close to where you work.
The exterior of the residential neighborhood, but the height of the building has been gradually lowered enough to head outside around the boulevard. It took a little more road width and was designed to make it easier for people to move around in minimal streets.
In the future, it is expected that this residential area will also expand as the town of Haratra grows. It is very unlikely to place tall buildings in variance given the problem of sunshine. Furthermore, there is a multilayer use of aerial corridors as a feature of the world tree towns, and narrow roads at the bottom make shading by aerial corridors easier to reach and reside in.
The founder of Haratra town looked at my blueprint for a while before closing his eyelids.
"Though not surprising, it is planned and profitable. It's a solid plan for the future."
"... thank you"
Unexpectedness, that's what made me nervous.
This plan is bringing together new architects to compete.
The founders of the town of Haratra want to incorporate young power into the town, and they expect us to create a residential neighborhood to excite the young people of the town.
You don't have to bother to ask a new architect to build a bridge, such as a solid, planned and profitable design, you can leave it to the bridgebuilder who asks you to build a bridge. That would do a better job of getting your feet to the ground.
Expectations were diminishing at the stage of sticking out the blueprints because I didn't see any surprises at that point.
Failed. It's totally my downfall.
He was distracted by making further profitability with the reduction in labor costs, the backing of the Comatsu Chamber of Commerce, as his strength, but rather he should have taken advantage of the margin of costs to bump it up in landmarks as well.
The founder's grandfather looks at me and smiles.
"What do you think of the bridge over this town?
Asked, I think of a bridge in the town of Haratra that connects the three branches. It is a diagonal bridge reminiscent of the Nhattan Bridge in Vietnam. It features a white painted A-shaped tower, which is easy to think of once you see it.
"I think it's an easy and adorable bridge to remember"
"Easy to remember and cute, huh? Glad to hear it."
The founder's grandfather laughs.
"It was Noon who crossed that bridge. No one will know where the town is when they hear of Haratra Town, but that's what I thought and crossed that bridge so anyone can tell me where it is if I mention the characteristics of that bridge. As you may already have noticed, what Nong et al. asked of you new architects is a residential neighborhood with new characteristics due to the sensitivities of the young. So, Amane, I can't adopt your plan."
"Okay. Thanks for letting me know. It was a very convincing story."
I don't feel half done. I have to go bow my head to the Chairman of the Comatsu Chamber of Commerce from now on.
The founder's grandfather opened his mouth when he was in a dark mood that the president of the Comatsu Chamber of Commerce would be disappointed.
"But I didn't think I could see it so realistically at your age and yet reflect it in my plan. The only people who could mention the village on the same branch were two, with the exception of you, both of whom had as much experience as they could soon become independent. Your proposal was very good, both financially and in terms of habitability. You can put your chest up there."
"Thank you"
Only the founder created one town, and the way candy is given is exquisite. I want to be your founder.
The founder takes his gaze off me and looks at Kanes.
"Kanes, Amane, can I show you your plan?
"Go ahead."
I'm interested in Kanes' plan. Enough to have you present at my presentation, so I thought there would be something.
Kanes stands up and comes up with a plan for me.
"This is..."
At first glance, I took a breath.
On the west side of the residential district, a small red tower stands in a form adjacent to the bridge connecting the commercial and industrial district of the town of Haratra. Its red tower had a park at its roots and an aerial corridor to facilitate access to the bridge was connected in the middle of the tower.
It was like wrapped in a red bottle with a beautiful wooden ribbon, which was exactly what could be landmark enough.
Its design is also surprising, but there is something even more surprising.
Apart from the blueprints, there are illustrations of completion expectations. Its illustrations, which are appealing visually and intensely, have tremendous effect on presentations in order competitions like this one.
There's no computer. I didn't think I'd bring the completion prediction diagram in a realistic picture so far in this world. It's the basics of the presentation, but neither me nor Richay could paint, so I could only prepare about a black and white sketch.
"Is this painting by Kanes?
"No, it's Calaria."
I heard you were the second daughter of a certain chairman of commerce in Yoinsley, but you grew up in a good enough environment to buy paint and practice. Though his qualities are likely to be there.
Can you paint all this and always top in academic exams? I also know they call me a talented woman or a genius.
"This time it means I win."
Caines laughing at it. Certainly a complete defeat.
"I admit it. If there's a next time, I won't lose."
In retrospect, Kanes gives me his hand.
"I won't lose, either."
I shook hands with Kanes to thank the founders before leaving Richay and the conference room behind.
Rumors I heard afterwards that Kanes' plan was officially adopted and the town of Haratra embarked on the development of a fourth branch.
