Chapter 17 It's not a mouth, but it can also speak

Chapter 17 Not a Mouth, But It Can Talk (1)
Micro-expressions tell us:
Laughter doesn't exactly represent happiness, it may also be ironic;

Frowning doesn't exactly represent anger, it may also be thinking;
Cursing the lips does not completely represent disdain, it may also be a suppressed smile;

……

what eyebrows tell you

When external strong light stimulates our eyes, the eyebrows will frown for the first time, forming a raised muscle above the eyes, like a small sunshade umbrella, protecting the eyes from damage. In addition to this basic function, eyebrows can also reflect a person's psychological state.

Under normal circumstances, when no external stimulation is received, the eyebrows as a whole present a radian with the eyebrow peak at the top. However, due to different factors such as age, race, gender, and personal grooming habits, the normal state of eyebrows will also vary. Some people also frown their eyebrows slightly in normal communication, looking worried or angry, but in fact it is probably just a habitual frown.

However, once the emotions explode, the eyebrows will change from the normal peace and become jumpy.

eyebrows when angry

The eyebrows are easier to identify when you are angry. The eyebrows are concentrated towards the center of the eyebrows, and at the same time, they are pressed down, forming a raised muscle between the eyebrows, and the eyebrows are raised upwards.Such eyebrow shape conveys two messages: "what are you going to do"; "how will I deal with you".

"What are you going to do?" Usually the other party has seriously stimulated the party, and the party's negative emotions have reached a peak.In order to protect their own interests, the parties will always pay attention to each other's every move, forming a posture of preparing to attack, that is, "how will I deal with you".

When preparing to deal with the opponent, the parties will exert great energy to protect themselves and give themselves the upper hand in the battle, so the range of movements will become larger and the strength will increase accordingly. When the energy is about to be released, the facial expression will also show the same explosive state, the eyes will widen, the brows will rise, the nostrils will open, and the breathing will become rapid. When anger becomes uncontrollable and must explode, the body attacks. So when you see someone in this state, it is best to stay away or communicate with him in a gentle way, otherwise once he vents his anger completely, it will be a crazy and powerful attack.

The formation of angry eyebrows requires the simultaneous action of the frontalis and corrugator supercilii muscles, and it is not easy to fake this.

In addition, there are some facial cues to follow when angry enough to attack, such as slightly upward eyeballs, retracted jaw, and slightly lowered head.We can see this kind of expression in some games like Sanda. The athletes will instinctively lower their heads before starting to attack. This is the original reaction to protect important parts such as the throat. So in daily life, if someone shows such a state, it proves that he is ready for a fight.

What needs to be pointed out is that the frown state formed by lowering the eyebrows and half-closed eyelids does not only represent the negative emotion of anger, but also worry, confusion, dissatisfaction, disgust, thinking, etc., which need to be combined with certain situations to do make an accurate judgment.

eyebrows when sad
Sad eyebrows are not as easy to judge as angry eyebrows. In most cases, the brows are depressed and raised when sad, but this change is so small that it is not easy to observe, and not all sad expressions show this change. There is a kind of sadness, the eyebrows will not rise, and there will be no raised muscles between the eyebrows, but more like the normal eyebrow shape. This kind of sadness can generally be described as "lost soul", which means that the person concerned has lost any positive emotions that can be mobilized, lost strength, unable to use muscles, and thus unable to change eyebrows.

In this case, we had to look at another area of expression cueing sadness—the eyelids.Eyelids can be simply understood as eyelids, and their changes in sad expressions are slightly more obvious than eyebrows.

In general, sad expressions engage the orbicularis oculi, corrugator supercilii, and frontalis muscles. The orbicularis muscle concentrates the inside of the eyelids toward the middle, which stimulates the lacrimal glands under the eyelids for the brewing and outflow of tears.

eyebrows for confidence
Eyebrows are raised when people are surprised and confident.Unlike the state of raised eyebrows and widened eyes in surprise, the raised eyebrows in confidence will only cause a slight enlargement of the eyes.In communication, if a person raises his eyebrows instantly, it means that he is very good at what he is talking about and full of confidence.

Have you ever encountered such a situation: When you were chatting with a friend, the friend asked you a difficult question. When asking a question, my friend's eyebrows were raised quickly, and then quickly returned to their original shape. When you say you don't know, the other party will quickly give you the answer. This raised eyebrow conveys: I guess you don't know the answer, but I do.When you encounter this situation again in the future, you don't have to bother to think about the answer, because the other party only wants to hear one answer, which is "I don't know."

Of course, not all brow changes are real. Some actors are very good at controlling eyebrows. They can use the changes of eyebrows to convey the character's current emotions. This is deliberate camouflage. There is also a very powerful performance method called Stanislavsky performance method. It teaches performers to measure their emotions accurately by reliving some of the emotions they have had in the past. The facial expressions shown by such performers are not fake, but are shown by reliving some emotions from the past, and it is true in a way.For example, when expressing sadness, it is necessary to recall the sad past events in order to promote the outburst of emotions. Many actors will encounter such a problem, that is, they lose control after a crying scene, their emotions cannot be turned back, and they continue to cry until their emotions are exhausted. This means that they have completely convinced themselves that the emotion just now is real, not acting. If you encounter such a liar, it is a very difficult problem. They deceive themselves with lies, and gradually convince themselves that the lies are true, so that all emotions and expressions are real, making it difficult to distinguish authenticity from falsehood.Faced with this kind of liar, the only thing to do is wait patiently until the moment they think they are lying.

Why are the eyeballs rolling around?

In daily communication and communication, it is not difficult to find that the speaker's eyeballs are not always fixed at a certain point, they sometimes turn to the left, sometimes to the right, sometimes to go up, and sometimes to go down. Most people ignore this question, but eye movements play a crucial role in the study of microexpressions.

It was Richard Bandler and John Glinder who first discovered that eye movement is related to people's thinking, and the two co-founded NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), which includes EAC (Eye Interpretation Cues). They believe that eyeball activities can be divided into the following conditions:

Eyes looking up and to the left indicate that people are recalling images; eyes looking up and to the right indicate that people are creating images. This falls under visual memory and visual creation.

Looking up to the left means that people are recalling the sound; looking up to the right means that people are creating the sound. This belongs to auditory memory and auditory construction.

Looking down to the left means that people are thinking for themselves, which is called "internal dialogue"; looking down to the right means that people are feeling, which includes emotional feelings and physical feelings, which belongs to kinesthetic memory.Studies have shown that chronically looking down and to the right can lead to depression.

If you ask a friend if he went to the beach on vacation, if his eyes look up to the left and then down to the right, it proves that he is first remembering the scene at the beach, and then recalling how he felt and affirming the beach trip certainty. This can prove that he really went to the beach. If he quickly glances up and to the right after hearing your question, he's mentally searching for photos or images of beaches he's seen and using those memories to compose his beach experience. That's enough proof that he hasn't been, but he's trying to describe a beach so that you believe he has.

Now let's do an interesting experiment to prove the relationship between eye movement and sensory memory.

You look up and to the left, thinking about a friend you haven't seen in years.Although you can't remember many details, but his overall appearance will still appear in your mind.Give yourself half a minute to recall, don't rush, try to recall as many details as possible.Half a minute later, the eyes looked straight ahead, forgetting what he had just recalled. Then look down to the right and recall what that friend looked like.At this time, you will find that the recall was very smooth just now, but now the recall is always intermittent, as if it is difficult to concentrate. This means that looking down and to the right does not help visual recall.

However, this pattern of eye interpretation clues does not apply to everyone. Some people's sensory memory and eye movement are just the opposite. Although this type of person is rare, it still exists. At this time, we can't completely rely on this model to judge, but we need to understand the relationship between the other party's sensory memory and eye movement.

You can ask him some simple questions:

"What color are the walls in your room?" If his eyes look up and to the left and he gives the answer, it proves that his visual memory is in line with the eye's pattern of interpreting cues.If you're not sure, keep asking questions, such as asking him to describe what his mother looks like, until you're sure his visual memory fits the eye's pattern of interpreting cues.

Next is visual creation, try asking: "How do you imagine the opposite sex wearing your clothes?" "How about changing the wallpaper at home to floral?" If his eyes look to the upper right, then You can then judge the truth of what he said by following the pattern of eye interpretation clues.

This is followed by auditory memory and auditory construction.Regarding auditory memory, you can ask: "How do you sing the chorus of your favorite song?" Play it underwater, what would it sound like?" If his eyes go left when remembering and right when creating, then he fits the eye-interpreting cue pattern.

Finally, there is kinesthetic memory. You can ask him what moldy bread smells like, or ask him to try to imagine cuddling with his favorite person. If his eyes look down and to the right, he fits the eye-interpreting cue pattern. If you still want to continue asking, you can ask him what words of encouragement he would say to himself if he fails. If his eyes look down and to the left, he is having an "internal dialogue."

telltale eyes

Eyes provide many other cues for microexpressions besides eye movement. And this requires careful observation.

Clue [-]: Direction of gaze

Changes in mood can lead to changes in the direction of the gaze: down when you are depressed or sad; down or sideways when you are shy or guilty; and away when you are repulsed or disgusted. But the gaze is so easy to control that it doesn't even require special training. Some people who are good at lying can keep their eyes on you, so don't use the sincerity of the other person's eyes as a reason to convince yourself.

Clue [-]: Pupil Dilation
The FBI once took over a murder case involving sexual harassment. After the suspect was arrested, he never admitted that he had sexual intentions for the female deceased, let alone killed her because of the other party’s resistance. At that time, the suspect's semen was not found in the body of the female deceased, so it was difficult to pass the evidence.Later, when observing the interrogation video of the suspect, the detectives discovered a detail, that is, when the suspect mentioned the female deceased, his pupils would dilate. This crucial detail gave away the suspect's true thoughts. The pupils dilate only when people see or think about something they like, most notably sexual desire. The detectives seized this detail and questioned him continuously, and finally let the suspect bow his head and plead guilty.

The pupil is not a separate organ, but a small hole in the middle of the iris.Only when light passes through the pupil can it form an image on the retina. When the light is too bright, the pupil narrows in order to protect the optic nerve from damage. When the light dims, the pupil dilates to absorb more light and see a clearer image. The pupils are controlled by smooth muscles, which obey only the autonomic nerves, not the conscious mind.In other words, the dilation or shrinkage of the pupil is a completely real reaction and cannot be faked.

When people see something they like, their pupils naturally dilate to get a clearer image. When seeing something disgusting, the pupils will naturally narrow to reduce the discomfort caused by negative stimuli.

Clue Three: Tears
Shedding tears is also a behavior controlled by the autonomic nerve, and its appearance must be stimulated by certain emotions, such as sadness, fear, worry, and joy. However, it is difficult to judge whether the appearance of tears is stimulated by the current emotion.Just like the Stanislavsky performance method mentioned earlier, it can teach people to relive their true emotions, so as to obtain the emotions that need to be reflected at the moment. But one thing is for sure, whether staged or real, the emotions behind the tears must be real.

There is such a case, an American mother lost her daughter, so she cried bitterly to the media every day.But according to the FBI's investigation, the mother probably killed her daughter. But no one would believe this, because the pain shown by that mother was too shocking, who would believe that such a sad mother killed her daughter with her own hands. Her tears won the sympathy and trust of most people, but FBI observers found in a video that although the mother was crying, she had a flash of guilt.Observers judged that the mother's tears may not be from sadness, but from guilt after killing her daughter.Usually, the murderer will show guilt, fear, disgust, and contempt afterwards, but people who are good at disguising can control these emotions, but the real emotions will always flash across the face, this is the power of micro-expressions .Although the case has been controversial, observers firmly believe that the mother is by no means innocent.

Clue [-]: Blink and close your eyes

The eye closing and blinking to be discussed here refer to the reaction of the eyes after external stimuli, because both of these facial changes can be controlled by consciousness, so deliberate and habitual blinking and eye closing are out of the scope of the discussion.

We can first make a beautiful imagination:

Walking barefoot on the warm beach in the evening, the sun shines on the sea, a beautiful scene of melting gold in the setting sun.The wonderful music and the sound of the waves came from the ears, and people couldn't help but dance freely. At this time, the lover of your dreams comes from not far away, and you hold hands with him (her) and dance together.

Do you close your eyes unconsciously and picture this romantic scene in your mind, or even the look of the lover in your dreams. This kind of closed eyes is positively stimulated, you are intoxicated, enjoying, and depicting some details in your mind.It is not difficult to see that the biggest effect of this kind of eye closure is to strengthen the feeling of a certain part of the senses. In the midst of flowers, take a deep breath with your eyes closed to strengthen your sense of smell; close your eyes when tasting delicious food and wine to strengthen your sense of taste; close your eyes when listening to music to strengthen your sense of hearing. In short, closed eyes are positively stimulated for concentration.Just like you pictured the scene just now in your mind, it requires a high degree of concentration to do it.

In terms of facial expression, with eyes closed after being positively stimulated, the whole demeanor is relaxed and joyful. The corners of the mouth will be slightly upturned, and the eyebrows will be relatively flat with little change.

In addition to positive stimuli, many negative stimuli can also make us close our eyes, such as seeing a bloody operation, seeing a certain scene in a horror movie, being threatened by some kind, wanting to escape because of sadness, seeing a certain Disgusting things, helpless because of disappointment...

Eyes close in response to negative stimuli to block uncomfortable visual information, often involuntarily.Under the sudden negative stimulus, before the consciousness has time to react, the eyes will instinctively close to protect themselves from harm.

From the perspective of expression, the eyes closed after being negatively stimulated, the whole state shows discomfort and disgust. The chin has uneven folds, the corners of the mouth are down, the brows are wrinkled, and the bridge of the nose has horizontal folds. This involves the movement of many muscles such as the frontalis muscle, corrugator eyebrow muscle, orbicularis oculi muscle, lower lip muscle, and orbicularis oris muscle. It's hard to fake.

Like closing your eyes, blinking can be controlled freely, but rapid blinking is an instinctive closing. This situation often occurs when people encounter difficult problems. We may often encounter such a situation. During the interview, the examiner will ask some content that we are not good at.Maybe you didn't notice it, but you can clearly see it if you take a picture. When you encounter a difficult problem, you will blink several times in 4 seconds. This is the result of our instinct to close our eyes to avoid problems while trying to open our eyes to solve them.

The difficult problem here is different from some calculations that require mathematical logic. It refers to the need to think about what to do next, how to solve this problem quickly, and what should I say.We usually frown when encountering the former, and blink quickly when encountering the latter, and the direction of the gaze will change while blinking.

Clue five: roll your eyes

Rolling eyes, in our understanding, represents contempt. But in addition, it may also represent a desire to be closer, which generally occurs between male and female friends, and more often occurs in women. This kind of eye roll is different from contempt. Generally, the eyes will return to the man's pupils and a smile will appear. On the one hand, it is to show their cuteness and sincerity, and on the other hand, it is to seek a signal of affirmation from the man.The man must distinguish it from rolling eyes with contempt and disgust, otherwise it will cause unnecessary misunderstanding and trouble.
