Forever Destined To The Silver Shadow
Chapter 292 - Loyal Servant Like Me...
Edwin's POV:
It has been a day since the trickster in the disguise of the Prince disappeared from the castle. I expected him to return back here soon to haunt me, but he didn't return. I wished that he would never come back here.
I was scared of that trickster, but I was even more scared for the Fae King. He hasn't woken up for two days. The healer, Fae Lord Aeson, is taking good care of King Oberon. Still, why hasn't he woken up?! And if he doesn't wake up, how can I tell him that an imposter in the disguise of his son is ruling the Kingdom right now?!
Silver Shadow did tell me not to say this to anyone. He threatened to kill me if I ratted him out. But I don't care about my life anymore. I am bound to serve the King and the people of this realm. I have already taken an oath that I wouldn't hesitate to sacrifice my life for the welfare of my people. So I don't care if that trickster kills me! I will say this truth to the Fae King before he returns to the castle.
I knocked on the door of the Fae King's chamber twice and waited for a response. I had no confidence that the King would give me an answer. I expected the butler or the healer Fae would shoo me off from here for disturbing the sick King. But to my surprise, it was the King who answered. "Come in, whoever you are," his feeble yet strong voice said.
When I pushed the door, it immediately opened. He didn't even lock his door! And when I got inside, I was even more surprised. I thought that he would be lying down in his bed covered by blankets. But he was standing before the window of his chamber and viewed the scenery of the gardens outside.
"What is the matter, Edwin?" he said without even looking at me. How did he know that it was me?! He is facing away from me, yet he found out who I am?! Sometimes I wonder if the King has a third eye on his back. Even when he is on the battlefield, his instincts are always on alert. He always knows it when someone approaches from behind. And that is why he is always the best warrior in this realm!
I slowly paced towards the King and bowed down to him. "Your majesty, I am sorry that I didn't say this to you before. But my life was in danger, and I got scared. I will confess everything to you now—"
"What do you want to say, boy?" he said in a firm tone that he uses to his court subjects. "Are you coming to say that the Silver Shadow is now in the disguise of my son and currently ruling this land?"
I was stunned to no extent. How did he know about that? The Fae King turned to me while I was completely dazed in confusion. A wild smirk formed on his lips while he looked at me.
"I don't know what you all think of me," he sighed. "You all think that I am just a weak old man?"
I immediately shook my head and wondered why he was even asking me such a question. When did I even call him old?
He smirked again and said, "I might seem weak sometimes—but I know everything that is happening in this castle. I know how Silver Shadow entered my castle before in the disguise of Perspicacious Fae. I know how he tried to sabotage Celestia's coronation ceremony. I even know what he is doing right now."
My confusion increased even more after that. So he knew about this and did nothing?! But why?! I wanted to yell at him and confront him. Why did he let this all happen?! Why did he do nothing while that trickster came to this castle in disguise twice?!
The Fae King then turned his back to me and moved to the window that was on the opposite side of the wall. "Silver Shadow thinks that he is smart and everything. But what he forgets every time is that I am his father! I was in this world before him, and I have more experience than him! I exactly know what he is planning right now with Celestia, and I know how to deal with him—"
My head started to spin as my confusion took over me. What does he mean by calling him his son?! Does this mean that he is his father?! No! It can't be! Perhaps he was saying it as a metaphor. And he is right, after all. Silver Shadow is just a child before the mighty king Oberon. He has ruled this land for more than five thousand years. I bet that he had faced and defeated so many men like that trickster!
I moved near the King and asked him in a polite tone. "Your majesty, I am sorry for even doubting your potential. But I am curious to know how you are going to overpower that trickster this time? And how are we going to recuse the Dawn?! I am scared for her. I am afraid that he might ruin her again, and we can't let that happen—"
He wasn't even bothered by my words. He seemed to be more interested in viewing the gardens outside instead of listening to me. "My boy, you need to understand that it is too late for the Dawn," he said after a while. "Because that girl never listens to me at all…."
He said the last sentence in a roar that I trembled and took a step away from him. Why is he yelling now? He then ferociously turned to me as if a predator was looking at a little rat on its way. I had no other option except to tremble before him like a hopeless rat.
"I told her more than a thousand times to not give in to that trickster. But that girl can't control her desires! She repeatedly falls prey to that trickster and gives up her purity to him like it is just a fruit. Now tell me, Edwin, how can I help the girl whose desire is to destroy herself?!"
I didn't like the way he was talking about Celestia. I know how much she tries to be the perfect daughter for her father. She even gave up her life willingly when her father asked him to do so. But the Fae King is abusing her now?!
I wanted to defend Celestia to the mighty Fae King—but what more can a loyal servant like me do expect listening to what the King says?!
