12.3

Junghoo raised his hand again as if to hit her, but when Saeun glared at him angrily, he just gritted his teeth. He finally stood up and announced,

“I don’t know where you learned these bad manners. And when did you become such a whore? If you ever get pregnant before getting married, I’m going to kill you. You better behave yourself and be a good girl. Got it?”

Saeun almost burst into laughter. She remembered Junghoo dragging his girlfriends to the hospitals to get abortion since he was in university. Saeun knew all about it because she paid for all those hospital bills. So it was hilarious that he was giving her this lecture.

But then, she should’ve known not to expect any common sense from her brother. Saeun decided to give up fighting him. She hugged her knees and sighed deeply. Junghoo continued to grumble as he walked to the front door. Before leaving, he turned towards her one more time and glared.

“If you don’t answer my call again, I’m going to go to your work and make a scene. If you don’t want to get embarrassed, you better answer my calls and get my money ready. Do you understand?”

Whatever. Saeun didn’t reply and just looked away. She heard him slam the door shut as he left. She didn’t want to ever see him again. She was an idiot for thinking she could make him go away with just 10 million won. Why did she make such an offer to begin with anyway? Saeun should’ve continued to refuse him. But at a weak moment, a silly thought crossed her mind. She thought that perhaps Junghoo would finally leave her alone if she gave him this money.

Saeun had made this mistake before. And she did it again. She had been living in a fantasy world lately that she had become an idiot. She murmured,

“What a fool I am…”

Her face buried on her knees, Saeun didn’t move for a long time. Her butt and her knee still throbbed badly. If they bruised, she knew Wooyoung would demand to know what happened. Yes, Wooyoung would want to know what happened.  In this cold and cruel world, it was only Wooyoung who was interested in her. Saeun knew that if she limped, no one from work or not even her own parents would ask her if she was okay.

Wooyoung was the only person in this world who cared for her and loved her. But if he stayed with her, Saeun knew his life would be ruined as well. It wasn’t that she took Junghoo’s threat seriously. Junghoo said he was going to write about her relationship with Wooyoung on the internet, but… She knew this wasn’t going to be a big problem. Most people were going to ignore it, and if not, she expected Wooyoung’s agency to take care of it. Perhaps Wooyoung would really sue Junghoo. Based on what she had seen, the people in the entertainment world weren’t fragile beings.

But if she remained with Wooyoung, she knew Junghoo would ask for even more money. Her older brother was going to demand more and more, and Saeun knew that Wooyoung would try to help her by giving money to Junghoo. But would this end with just one payment?

No way. Saeun knew Junghoo would bully her and Wooyoung for the rest of their lives.

“This can’t happen.”

Saeun slowly looked up at the ceiling. She could imagine what might happen in the end. Wooyoung would become sick of her family, and eventually, sick of her too. After all, Saeun herself was tired of her own family, so it couldn’t take long before Wooyoung became resentful.

If Wooyoung ever saw her with hate in his eyes, Saeun didn’t think she could take it. She would either jump in front of a train or stab Yun Junghoo with a kitchen knife.

“This can’t go any further…”

Saeun stood up slowly. Her hip still hurt badly, but there was nothing she could do about it. Her priority was to save Wooyoung. And to save him, she needed to leave him. Wooyoung had the right to meet a woman much better than her. It was only for a brief time, but Saeun felt thankful she had the opportunity to spend any time with him at all. She would remember this for the rest of her life.

“Marry him…? I must’ve lost my mind. Why did I think for a moment that it was going to work? This was just a silly dream… And I need to wake up from it and face the real nightmare.”

Saeun couldn’t help laughing like a mad woman. Yet at the same time, she could feel the hot tears rolling down her cheeks.

“What did I do in my previous life to deserve this? Why did I have to be born with an older brother like that?”

Saeun asked the room. Obviously, no one answered, but she really wanted to know. If she was stuck with Junghoo because she did something horrible in her past life, Saeun wanted to know so she would never do it again. That way, her next life might be better. All she wanted was to live a normal happy life. A life with a man who loved her…

“Why does my life suck so bad…”
