Legendary Shadow

Just when Liam was about to leave the city, Whitney was chasing after him. Liam frowned when he saw Whitney chasing after him and thought that she was going to ask him to do more things for her. 

Just when he was about to run away, Whitney blurted out something about a battle. This made Liam stop in his tracks. As he turned around to get more information, Whitney told him that they normally have underground battles late at night in the city and tonight was going to be the biggest battle tournament of them all. 

The first-place prize is an egg from a different region that is believed to be from one of the strongest Pokémon in that region. Due to this, a lot of people were flocking from different cities just for this battle. The place had gotten so overwhelmed that the tickets were sold out. 

Liam was now excited as he thought, "Man. Imagine if I transform that Pokémon into this unknown type. It will be quite exciting." But then he thought about the pain he would have to go through in order to do that and grimaced. 

Regardless Liam wanted to go and try out this battle arena. Maybe he could gain some insight. Whitney told him that she had an extra ticket 4 months ago and didn't think it would blow up like this. She had already sold 3 tickets making quite a lot of money from it and was now she gave the last one as a gift to Liam. 

Liam appreciated it but she said, "No. Thank you for last night. If you weren't that good, I probably wouldn't have gifted it to you." Liam could only smile embarrassingly as they went away to prepare for the tournament tonight. 

Liam was just hanging out with Whitney the entire day. She enjoyed herself, making Liam shop around with her and on top of that he had to pay for it. He was annoyed by this, but he thought it would be worth it since he was able to get a ticket from her. 

They went back to her gym as they had another battle. Lucario was way too much for the rest of her Pokémon. Liam asked her, "Don't you have any stronger Pokémon?" Whitney shrugged and said, "No I just became the gym and I haven't had much motivation to train." 

Liam was annoyed by her undisciplined ways and he taught her a lesson by bringing out Tyranitar. Whitney was so scared she said, "Please put him away" in fear. Liam was more shocked by this as he thought "A gym leader fears a Pokémon. This is my first." 

Whitney was sobbing as she said when she was younger, she had been traumatized by one of those Pokémon and ever since then she had never been able to face one. Liam was confused by this as he said, "What if a Challenger comes and has one?" She said she hasn't been unlucky enough to witness one again in her gym but if that happened, she would have to toughen up and deal with it. 

Luckily, the challengers always brought the pre-evolved form(s), which are either Larvitar or Pupitar, which she's not scared of. Liam shook his head as he thought the old gym leader set her up for failure. Liam then went to the Pokémon Center with Whitney to get their Pokémon healed up after the tough training that they put them through. 

The night finally came as the city was bustling with activity. Whitney and Liam made their way down to the underground arena. Liam looked around and thought that "A few of the new young trainers also entered. Some of them are participating as well. Some just want to watch to gain experience." 

After turning in their tickets, they were given a number and a place where they could go and change if they needed to. In the waiting area, everybody there was from different cities so the attire they were wearing was quite different and festive. 

There was going to be over a hundred trainers in this tournament. As they wanted to whittle it down, they had quick battles amongst each other. They were only allowed to have three Pokémon to use in their battles and they could choose to do one on one, two on two or three or three.  

Liam normally chose the three on three as he brought out Lucario, Omanyte, and Kabuto to fight his battles. The first trainer had his Pokémon all under level 40 so Lucario was enough to take all three of them out with Omanyte and Kabuto in the back, they formed a triangle. Lucario was upfront and Kabuto and Omanyte were in the back using their projectile attacks.
