Mutant Farmer in The Apocalypse
Chapter 58 - A Mana Bead!
—
June 30:
The whole village has been surrounded. There is no way out anymore. We're here waiting for aid from the government to no avail.
If the zombie breaks our defense, I will have to hide the remaining youngsters inside the dark corridor that connected my clinic to Nurse Xie's house. I'll tell her to lock her side and let the kids hide until the situation is safe.
—
That was the last entry written by Doctor Jun in his exam book. It was around when the zombie apocalypse started to go really crazy and uncontrollable.
It was just like a small pandemic at first, but for some reason, the government hid the existence of the virus until it was too late, and everyone was infected by it.
No humans were spared. Even a newborn would develop and turn into either a zombie, ability user, or regular human with immunity.
Yang Zhang could conclude that Doctor Jun probably told the remaining people to hide inside the dark corridor, but he didn't know there were people with slow mutation, like Xiao Mei from the mini-market.
Yang Zhang closed the book and let out a heavy sigh. He thought there was no life outside of the shelter. They had to either stay in the shelter or die outside.
But when he got kicked out, he realized that the world was still going on. He found many new friends, enemies, and his little mutated pets.
Yet, he also found many sad stories.
From Xiao Mei Jiejie's story, she got stuck inside that mini-market. She suffered a slow infection until she turned into a zombie.
Xi Feng's story, he lived inside that village full of mutated zombie villagers. He got her little sister killed by an ability user.
Miss Kobra decided to rebel against the government and set up her own settlement exclusive for humans with immunity.
And now, Doctor Jun tried his best to save this village from the villagers who had been mutated into zombies.
Yang Zhang looked at the skull near the window and slowly bowed his head to pay respect. He didn't know what Doctor Jun looked like, but he must've been a good doctor.
He was even kind enough to use his own saving to help those villagers to the city for better medication.
As Yang Zhang was paying respect, a gust suddenly blew from the broken window, hitting the skull, and flipped it, showing a shiny blue bead hidden inside the skull.
Yang Zhang was stunned. The blue bead was shining under the sun, inviting him to take a look.
Yang Zhang took a step forward and grabbed the Mana bead.
Before he inspected the Mana bead, he put Doctor Jun's skull on the hospital bed, so it wouldn't get blown away by wind anymore. He also put the doctor's examination book beside the skull to honor him and all his effort. Though, in the end, it was all fruitless because everyone would die in the apocalypse anyway.
"Thank you for your sacrifice, Doctor Jun. You're a great and selfless man. I hope your soul Rest In Peace."
Yang Zhang pulled a chair and sat while checking the Mana bead he had just found.
It was a perfectly persevered Mana bead. It was a little dusty because it had been sitting inside Doctor Jun's skull for so long.
"I wonder what kind of ability this Mana bead has," Yang Zhang mumbled.
"Squeak?"
"Chirp?"
Chestnut and Spicy Wing jumped to help inspect the Mana bead. This was probably the shiniest Mana bead that he had ever encountered because most of the time, the Mana bead would be really dirty or stained with blood.
It made him wonder whether it had a stronger effect or something else…
Doctor Jun also hadn't discovered his ability until his death, it seems. Because there was no mention of him doing something powerful inside his exam book.
"I've heard from some people in my previous shelter that there are few ability users who are late in their mutation. So they don't know that they have an ability until that ability mutates inside their body."
"I think that's quite a pity too because they will either die getting eaten by Zombie or grouped with us, humans with immunity."
Yang Zhang continued staring at the Mana bead until he nodded, "Well, there is only one way to find out."
Yang Zhang wiped the Mana bead and took a deep breath to brace himself again. He opened his mouth and—
"Upp—Urk!" Yang Zhang covered his mouth, trying his hardest not to puke the Mana bead out.
"Gulp," Yang Zhang successfully swallowed the Mana bead, but he felt the same sensation just like when he swallowed the Mana bead when fighting those jungle fowls in the forest before.
He could feel the Mana bead was stuck under his throat as if it refused to get consumed by Yang Zhang.
…
…
Yang Zhang closed his eyes, waiting to see the reaction of the Mana bead inside his body. Slowly, he could feel that his body was burning from the inside, and he lost his consciousness for five seconds, and then… nothing.
"Uhh… where is the power?" Yang Zhang thought. There was no change in his body after he swallowed the Mana bead.
"Squeak?"
"Chirp?"
"Yeah, there is no change in my body after I swallowed that Mana bead," Yang Zhang said. He tried to punch the air, "Fire fist!"
…
Nothing.
He tried to open his mouth and breathe out, "Ice breath!"
…
Nothing.
"Damn it, don't tell me that Doctor Jun's ability is like Deng Fan's useless ass, gold teeth ability," Yang Zhang complained. He never saw someone with ability as bad as Deng Fan. That was already a very low bar because apparently, Deng Fan couldn't grow his teeth back if he lost one. Hence, he only has a set of gold teeth that was literally useless.
Yang Zhang tried various poses, hoping that one would make him do something. That Mana bead started to get uncomfortable under his throat.
His poses slowly turned more and more ridiculous, to the point that Yang Zhang almost laughed at himself on how ridiculous he was.
He was about to give up until he heard the sound of a zombie from the other wooden door. Yang Zhang checked and saw a zombie was walking down the stair to an empty clinic corridor filled with dried blood everywhere.
The zombie wandered around mindlessly, but maybe he heard Yang Zhang's voice and decided to follow the sound.
Yang Zhang gulped. The first floor of this clinic had no zombies except the one from the second floor.
So he guessed the rest of the zombies were upstairs right now.
He didn't want to make a noise because he couldn't fight a horde of zombies inside this clinic without a plan. Because this clinic wasn't big enough for him to move around.
If he used Chestnut and Spicy Wing right now, they would make loud noises that would alert all other zombies. His gauntlet gun made a loud gun noise as well.
Yang Zhang thought he should just return to Nurse Xi's house through the dark corridor.
But then, he remembered his main mission, finding a first aid kit, or at least any medicine that might help in the future.
Yang Zhang watched the zombie carefully, he was thinking of a command, but before he could say something to his pets, he had the sudden urge to spit.
"Peh," Yang Zhang spat on the floor, and then he discovered something.
"Wha—my spit left a crack on the floor?" Yang Zhang saw that his spit broke and made a crack on the floor as if it had been hit by a rock.
"Peh! Peh!"
Crack. Crack.
"No, it's not my saliva that made the crack. It's the wind I made when I spit!" Yang Zhang discovered.
When he pouted his lips like he was about to whistle and blew the wind out of his mouth, he actually made a strong gust that could crack a wooden floor, as if he had an invincible dart from his mouth.
It was a very specific shape of his lips that activated this ability. That was why he had difficulty recognizing it before!
"Okay, if I can already crack the wall by using the wind only, that means I can also use other things…."
Yang Shang nodded and took one pea bullet from his pocket. He looked at the zombie outside. He aimed at the zombie, pouted his lips, and put a pea bullet in front of his mouth.
"Puh!"
Yang Zhang blew the pea bullet, and it launched just like using his gauntlet gun.
Pshew!
"Hrrrhh! Hrrh…."
The pea bullet hit and pierced the back of the zombie's skull, killing him in one hit and probably destroying his Brain bead in the process as well.
"Wow, this ability is… well, useful, at least. It's not some cool stuff, but it will definitely help me here!" Yang Zhang said.
He heard the zombie noises from upstairs again and firmed his decision, "Alright, let's go upstairs and kill those zombies one by one."
