38. Chapter 38: The World After Death

Sam was sobbing when Tufu puckered its tips and comforted her. “Don’t cry. Yu is too worried about Mingyu. She didn’t mean to hurt your feelings. Actually, she is a nice person.”

Xiao Yu wanted to continue yelling angrily but when she saw that Tufu comforted Sam and meanwhile tried to establish a good image of her, she stopped flaring up at Sam then. Instead, she kept poking the ghost boy to vent her anger. The ghost boy was poked so many times that it couldn’t help crying.

“Stop crying! Shut up, you little brat. If I had known that you were such a nuisance. I should have killed you today!” Xiao Yu pinched the ghost boy harshly. Due to pity for the ghost boy, Tufu hastened to snatched it from Xiao Yu, “Yu, don’t say that. It is a poor kid too. If it hadn’t been abandoned by its mother, it wouldn’t have become a ghost boy.”

Tufu tried its best to comfort the crying ghost boy, whose soft appearance made the ghost boy so touched that it held Tufu sobbingly. Xiao Yu puckered her lips and rolled her eyes.

With a clash of thunder, t started to rain. Instantly they were wet all over like drowned rats. Xiao Yu created a shield with her magic to cover them up and deliberately left Sam out, watching her slump on the ground miserably.

Wu Jiuge glanced at Sam and then left, saying, “Follow us. After bringing Young Master back to life, I have something to get even with you.” Sam was dragged away by Xiao Yu, dreadful and frightened.

As lightning crackled and thunder grumbled, it was raining cats and dogs. In the rain, a black umbrella appeared with a pair of red high-heels stepping on the ground, causing a lot of ripples. The black umbrella was slightly slanted and the person’s appearance was unveiled.

A young girl was wearing a blood-red bloody gothic lolita lace dress and a black necklace on her neck, with a vampire makeup. She had long hair falling over her shoulders, wearing a black hat and giving a sinister smile.

The blood stains on the ground suddenly gathered and converged into a blood ball. The girl opened her palm. The blood ball flew onto her palm and and slowly turned into a blood-red bead. The girl put the bead in front of her eyes and observed the scene inside the ball, saying with a smile, “Ming, I’ve been looking for you for many years. Now I finally found you…”

The girl stuck out the scarlet tongue to lick the blood bead and swallowed it. She licked her lips greedily, “The blood of Ming is delicious as always. Haha…”

With her queer laughing, the girl gradually disappeared in the rain, becoming transparent bit by bit. “Ming, this time I will not let you escape. You and I will become one in the end…”

Xia Mingyu felt great heaviness coming over his body and couldn’t open his eyes. He tried to move his body but he just felt weaker and weaker all over until he suddenly got much lighter. He opened his eyes only to find that he was floating in the air. Two men, one in black and one in white, walked to the blurry place ahead, carrying his arms.

“You…” Xia Mingyu knew that the two people were the Black Guard and White Guard. He tried to struggle but he was restrained tightly, unable to move.

The White Guard yawned and said to him, “Don’t waste your effort. You’re already dead. It’s time for you to cross over. What’s good about staying in the mortal world? Don’t cause trouble for us who work for King of Hell. We are so frazzled and have no time to rest. Damn it!”

Listening to the White Guard whining, Xia Mingyu snorted and still couldn’t help but ask, “I’m dead? Are you… Sure?”

“Of course you are, or why can you see us? Don’t try to flee back. Follow us to the netherworld.” The White Guard rolled his eyes, but his bangs were too long, blocking half of his face, which made him look a little scary.

Xia Mingyu was silent. He knew that he couldn’t escape now and he was faced with the Black and White Guard, unless he didn’t even want to be a ghost. He had better stay quiet.

Perhaps it was rare to meet such an obedient ghost. The White Guard praised Xia Mingyu and said, “There is nothing good about the mortal world, which is filled with so many dirty things. It is better to live carefree in the netherworld. If you really don’t want to stay in the netherworld, you can drink the Forgetting Water and go for reincarnation. Don’t ever try to be a wanderin ghost. It’s pretty miserable. You will be killed by the Taoist priests and monks or hunted by the guards of the Netherworld. But you look quite smart and obedient.”

“Yes, sir.” Xia Mingyu replied absentmindedly and then followed the Black Guard and White Guard off the mortal world and to the netherworld. When they officially entered the border of the netherworld, Xia Mingyu remained peaceful. On his deathbed, he didn’t want to die indeed, but after he was dead, he didn’t have that strong desire to live then. After all, he was dead anyway. How could he be resurrected?

However, the quietness on the way was broken soon, because Xia Mingyu couldn’t step onto the Naihe Bridge, as if there was a barrier stopping him. The Black Guard and White Guard shouted in surprise and then went back to stare at him with a startled look.

Xia Mingyu looked at his hands in confusion and then reached out his hands. As expected, his hands were blocked by the barrier above the Naho Bridge. He had no other choice but to gaze at the Black Guard and White Guard innocently, “It’s not that I don’t want to walk across the bridge but that I can’t. Why is that?”

The Black Guard, who didn’t speak all the way here, narrowed his eyes and said to him, “Open your mouth.”

Well, here was another man who asked him to open his mouth. Xia Mingyu twitched his mouth and opened his mouth obediently. Then the Black Guard said, “Stick out your tongue.”

Xia Mingyu stuck out his tongue. There was clearly a spell glistering on his tender pink tongue, as if it was telling people that its existence couldn’t be denied. The Black Guard shook his head and the White Guard sighed with wonder,”Well, it’s a mark. Fine. We finally meet such an obedient ghost but we cannot bring him into the chthonic regions. Ox-headed Demon and Horse-faced Demon are so much luckier than us.”

Xia Mingyu blinked his eyes. He knew that the mark was left by Zhao Yun, but he didn’t expect that the blood deed would work this way. So he wouldn’t die?

However, the White Guard seemed to have seen through his mind. He shrugged his shoulders and poured cold water on him, “Don’t think about it. People will die for sure. How can you not die? You just can’t enter the chthonic regions or be reincarnated. Instead, you can only be a wandering ghost. Poor thing!”

The White Guard patted Xia Mingyu’s shoulders sympathetically. The latter was stunned. He couldn’t be reincarnated? That was to say, he couldn’t go back to his body or enter the chthonic regions. He had to wander as a fierce ghost in the Three Realms?

“How… so…” He had seen so many ghosts in his life, but in the end, even he himself became a ghost. If he went out, would he be eaten by the other ghosts?

He turned around and left in frustration and murmured, “Noted then. I won’t make any trouble for you…”

The White Guard suddenly grabbed his hand. “Wait a minute. Come here. I feel that you smell quite familiar. Let me smell again for confirmation.”

The White Guard approached Xia Mingyu and observed him for a while. Then the former looked at the Black Guard. “Tut, Bro, tell me I’m not dreaming. This kid’s is actually Heavenly Soul. I must haven’t slept well, have I?” Why would a ghost guard need to rest?

The Black Guard flicked on the White Guard’s forehead. “Stop it. You are not dreaming.”

After confirming that Xia Mingyu was the Heavenly Soul, the White Guard rubbed his head and said, “Fine, you’re the Heavenly Soul. It seems that we have to send you back.”

“Ah? Send me back? But I’m already dead, aren’t I? Is it okay?” Xia Mingyu was pushed by the White Guard for a few times, totally in a loss. The White Guard was extremely depressed. “I don’t want you to leave either. You are the Heavenly Soul anyway! Before you finish your mission, no one dares to take you away but the heaven. Didn’t your soul-keeper tell you about this?”

Of course, Wu JiuGe didn’t tell him about the mission. God, how many things did he not know?

“No. Can you make it clearer? I don’t understand.” Xia Mingyu shook his head and looked at the White Guard very seriously. He just wanted to find out what he was and why so many people were after him. Only when he understood could he protect himself well.

The White Guard noticed that he was totally confused and thus became speechles. “No wonder you died without rhyme or reason. You don’t even know your mission. Alas, I may as well tell you. This is merely a game of the heaven.”

As the name implied, the Heavenly Soul referred to the soul with the heavenly fate, which was supposed to carry out his mission since the appearance. The mission could be anything. Each generation of the Heavenly Soul was different. It could be recovering the lost land, delivering all living creatures from torment or shuffling the human beings, which meant killing all the people who the heaven believed shouldn’t exist.

Generally, it was the soul-keeper who told the chosen one with the Heavenly Soul about his mission. The soul-keeper was the guardian angel of the chosen one with the soul, who also acted as a servant to look after him, protect him and help him complete the mission.

Only after completing the task could the chosen one with the Heavenly Soul leave the mortal world and return to the celestial world, but after that, he would have to engage in a new mission when he was back to the mortal world, or become reincarnation fragments to amend the loopholes of the world.

Needless to say, those who couldn’t complete their mission would come to a worse end. Perhaps they would directly turn into ashes.

Moreover, while carrying out the mission, the Heavenly Soul would encounter a lot of danger. Various demons and ghosts were coveting the power of the Heavenly Soul, for which the Heavenly Soul was like Xuanzang. As long as they devoured the Heavenly Soul, their power would become extremely strong in the world, making them invincible to all. Therefore, very few Heavenly Souls could accomplish their mission.

Tut. The Heavenly Soul had to shoulder such an important mission and yet, might not be able to come to a good end. Others only knew about the glory of the chosen one with the Heavenly Soul, but actually, the chosen one was the poorest person. No wonder Wu Jiuge said that the only person Xia Mingyu could trust in this world was him…

What about Zhao Yun? Did he know his identity? If he did, would he want to eat him? But on a second thought, he would rather be killed by Zhao Yun than be dismembered by vairous demons and ghosts. At least, Zhao Yun was the first person he had relied on this life…

The author’s words:

I’m not a ruthless writer for my main characters. A little sad plots are good for growing love; parting for a while is good for enhancing love. I suppose you must find that Zhao Yun’s biggest love opponent is Wu Jiuge… Don’t blame me. I won’t separate the main couple. There will be someone for Wu Jiuge. That’s all. By the way, thanks to Hermes’s rewarding. I will work harder at writing.
