41. Chapter 41: The Undead Soul-eating Worm

Translator: Cheryl_M

Xia Mingyu wiped the green liquid on his Tiyue Tang Sword with tissues resentfully. He had already walked through two compartments. Apart from the unknown long worm he killed just now, he couldn’t see any living person, or living being, let alone Wu Jiuge.

The long worm didsn’t seem difficult to deal with. Then where on earth did Wu Jiuge go?

“Wu Jiuge! Make a sound!” He went through the compartments one by one. On the ground there was nothing but the scattered human bodies. Xia Mingyu was rather tired and wanted to sit down for a rest when the sound of numerous arrows shot from behind his back.

Held with a warm embrace by someone, he was brought to jump down from the junction of the compartments. They rolled on the ground several times. After they stopped, Xia Mingyu recognized Wu Jiuge and then put down the Tiyue Tang Sword.

“Wu Jiuge, what’s going on?” He hastened to ask what had happened. Xia Mingyu could rarely see that Wu Jiuge put on an facial expression and that he looked rather stern.

Wu Jiuge threw out a small explosive bomb, blasting a green rain in the nearby air. However, a lot of worms gathered again shortly after a while, laying siege to Wu Jiuge and Xia Mingyu.

“These are undead soul-eating worms.” After Wu Jiuge just said that, the soul-eating worms in the air all rushed toward them. Wu Jiuge released the venomous snakes from his sleeve, which suddenly became bigger and swept over with its tail to smash the soul-eating worms to death. Nevertheless, the soul-eating worms came back to life as before.

Xia Mingyu was stunned with staring eyes. “These… These worms won’t die? What should we do?” Then he figured out why those people didn’t turn into ghosts after death. As the same implied, soul-eating worms ate souls. Since those people’s souls were eaten, how could they become ghosts?

“No one in the netherworld will deal with them?” Xia Mingyu slashed a soul-eating worm, but Wu Jiuge acted faster than him. The venomous snake turned into a snake-shaped long sword. Wu Jiuge, holding the snake’s head, moved swiftly in the air and struck constant slashes, every of which killed a soul-eating worm.

Before the soul-eating worms were resurrected, Wu Jiuge grabbed Xia Mingyu’s hand and ran. Xia Mingyu couldn’t keep up so for a few times, he was almost caught by the soul-eating worms. Wu Jiuge threw the snake-shaped sword out and the snake swept with its tail to buy time for them.

“Wu Jiuge, what should we do? They are chasing after us .” Xia Mingyu looked back and saw the snake besieged by the soul-eating worms, and more and more soul-eating worms fly to them. Some of the worms even bypassed the snake and flew at them fast.

Are these soul-eating worms also attracted by his core of Heavenly Soul? Wu Jiuge was his soul keeper, so did he have to die with Xia Mingyu?

“Wu Jiuge, forget it. Leave quickly. I can’t run away.” He struggled to shake off Wu Jiuge’s hand but instead, his hand was gripped more tightly. The soul-eating worms flung at him quickly. Staring at the nearby chelae, Xia Mingyu tried to push Wu Jiuge away.

Unexpectedly, Wu Jiuge, just breaking free from gravity, gave a reverse kick in the air to kick off the soul-eating worm. When he landed, he held Xia Mingyu up and tapped the groung on tiptoe to jump onto the head of the snake that followed him.

Looking at Xia Mingyu’s puzzled eyes, Wu Jiuge put on his indifferent look again, saying in an emotionless and and yet consoling voice, “I will protect you. You have my word.”

Having placed Xia Mingyu on the snake’s head, Wu Jiuge leapt to the air and withdrew the dagger tied around his thign without hesitation. He slit his palm, drew a spell in the air with his blood and mumbled. Xia Mingyu watched the blood spell fly to the soul-eating worms and instantly destroy them in the air.

Wu Jiuge returned to the ground with his lips pale. Because there were too many soul-eating worms, he used a lot of blood. Meanwhile, the venomous snake became smaller and went back into the sleeve of Wu Jiuge. Xia Mingyu quickly helped support Wu Jiuge, who was staggering.

“You… Are you alright?” Xia Mingyu was not as tall as Wu Jiuge. Now he was holding Wu Jiuge, which looked like the latter was completely leaning against him. In order to place too much pressure on him, Wu Jiuge sat down then.

Watching that Wu Jiuge was resting weakly, Xia Mingyu felt very guilty. He glanced at the Qiye Bead on his wrist and reached out his tender white hand, “Wu Jiuge, how about taking this off for me? In that case, the kylin pendant can protect me too.”

Wu Jiuge looked at the bead and stayed silent for a second, saying, “I can’t do it now. The person who cast the spell is very strong. Even if I am in the primary state, I may not be able to do it. Moreover, once the spell is broken, the one who cast the spell will feel it. I cannot put you into greater danger.”

Xia Mingyu looked at the bead on his hand and heaved a sigh. Greater danger? But he felt that if it was Cao Pi, the danger would be much lsmaller than the unknown danger hidden in the darkness.

He immediately thought of Zhao Yun at the thought of Cao Pi and couldn’t help wondering whether Zhao Yun had agreed on Cao Pi’s request.

“By the way, Wu Jiuge, what’s the function of the blood deed?” Xia Mingyu thought of the blood deed and asked hurriedly. Although he signed the blood deed with Zhao Yun, he didn’t know what the blood deed could do. Now he only knew that the blood deed could protect him from entering the chthonic regions, but as to the other functions were beyond my knowledge.

Wu Jiuge was resting in meditation, so he patiently explained to Xia Mingyu, “The blood deed, just like an intangible thread, connects the host and the owner. As long as both parties fit each other well enough, they can communicate telepathically, like sensing the other party’s specific location, feeling that the other party is safe or not, or even communicate only by looking the other party in the eye regardless of the distance.”

“Is that all? Can the blood deed also keep me from entering the chthonic regions?” Xia Mingyu asked and Wu Jiuge nodded, but Xia Mingyu had a feeling that the blood deed could do more than that.

But Wu Jiuge didn’t continue to say anything more. Xia Mingyu sat aside in dismay. He had no idea what Wu Jiuge hid from him or that he just thought too much.

Wu Jiuge sat for about an hour this time. Luckily, no other demons came to attack them. Xia Mingyu let out a sigh. They couldn’t take the train now. Now that such a severe incidence happened, he didn’t know how to deal with it, but Wu Jiuge asked him to leave it alone. Perhaps Wu Jiuge had a solution on his own.

Shortly after that, a big vulture flew from the air and hovered around before landing in front of Wu Jiuge. “Wu Jiuge, why do you look so awful this time? I can’t believe that you should ask Qiqi to send a demonic message to me for picking you up. What happened to you?”

“Some soul-eating worms only.” Wu Jiuge replied casually. The big vulture lowered its neck to let Wu Jiuge sit on it, Wu Jiuge regained his strength and wanted to hold Xia Mingyu, but the latter dodged.”No, I can go up myself.” Actually, it was difficult. After all, the vulture in front of him was extraordinarily huge…

Eventually, he couldn’t resist Wu Jiuge. Held onto the back, of the vulture, Xia Mingyu stared at the clouds in a trance. He didn’t expect that Wu Jiuge would have a relationship with spirits… Oh, no, Xiao Yu and Tufu were spirits too.

“Wu Jiuge, where are you going?” The big vulture asked. Sitting on the back of the vulture and protecting Xia Mingyu, Wu Jiuge glanced at  Xia Mingyu who was in a trance and said, “Luoyang.”

“Oh, well, I think the smell on him…”

“Shut up. Keep your hands off him, or I will kill you to make a stew.” Wu Jiuge’s words made the vulture shudder. Then the vulture said sobbingly, “Come on! I was only asking. Why are you so mean? I’ve travelled all the way to pick you up. How can you bully me?”

How did it feel to see an extraordinarily huge vulture cry like a spoiled child? Xia Mingyu only got goosebumps. As expected, Wu Jiuge’s acquaintances were not ordinary people or spirits…

But why did Wu Jiuge always deal with spirits? Was it related to his mission?

Xia Mingyu squinted his amber eyes, speculating what his mission was. Wu Jiuge felt that he was thinking. Then he lowered his head and said to the vulture, “After arriving at the destination, I’ll give you what you want.”

“Yes sir! I guarantee to complete the task promptly! Sit tight! I’m speeding up!” The big vulture sped up abruptly, as if taking a stimulant. Xia Mingyu was frightened. He could have seatbelt on the plane, but now there were no safety measures!

“Slow down!” Xia Mingyu screamed in horror, and Wu Jiuge held him towards his arms, “Don’t be afraid. You won’t fall.”

Thanks for the comfort, but he needed a seatbelt more now… T △ T

The vulture flew much faster than Xiao Yu. It only took one hour or two to reach Luoyang, but Xia Mingyu arrived there unconscious. The big vulture was too active, which even flipped upside down on the way. Xia Mingyu, the poor kid, was so scared that he passed out. No, maybe he got vulture-sick…

After the big vulture arrived in Luoyang City, it transformed itself into a young man with a long braid. It stood before Wu Jiuge with gleaming eyes, just like an honest servant…

Seeing that Wu Jiuge just walked forward with his Xia Mingyu, the big vulture suddenly became grieved and followed him with puckered lips, “You’ve promied me. There can be no turning back.”

Just after he finished speaking, Wu Jiuge glared at him and threw a small golden lotus to it. The big vulture instantly jumped up and down with excitement. Wu Jiuge gave it a kick, making the big vulture fall on the ground.

“Idiot, be quiet. The Young Master is resting.” Wu Jiuge fed a pill to Xia Mingyu and as a result, Xia Mingyu finally got better. the big vulture rose from the ground, patted the dust off his body, and mumbled, “Humph! How can I know that little kid is so afraid of height? Besides, you didn’t tell me before, did you?”

“…” Wu Jiuge looked at the vulture grimly, which totally freaked it out. Seeing that the big vulture really shut up, Wu Jiuge snorted and went directly to the nearest hotel. In a hurry the big vulture followed him, “Hey, wait for me!”

“Get out of here. Go away before I change my mind, or I’ll stew you.”

“Oh, Wu Jiuge, don’t be so inhuman. I’m one of the only two persons who know your true gender. What’s more, do you have your ID card with you?”

“… I brought it but I dropped it…”

“See? I knew it. You are loath to part with me.”

“…”
