Omegaverse: The Alpha X’s Prey
Chapter 15 - Windows to the soul.
There was silence. The Devil was the first to speak.
"What. Did. You. Say…?" The Director enunciated every word-releasing more pheromones. The surrounding people trembled, even the oh so powerful Alpha X.
It was only Donovan who didn't tremble under such intense waves. He wasn't affected at all.
"You're a Beta aren't you?" Donovan stepped in front of a still shocked Maverick and walked up to the man. He ignored the big guys with the shiny guns, all of his attention was on the Director.
The Director bent down to Donovan's level and said in a low voice laced with untold malice, "I am an Alpha."
"If you say so… Alpha." Donovan looked deep into those soul-less eyes with an unwavering stare. "Eyes are the windows to the soul, you know that right?"
The man didn't say anything, but furrowed his hairless brows. He couldn't pull away from his stare. Instead he found himself lost in a sea of orange. Orange flames. He could practically feel the scalding licks on his body, reminding him of the day he was hideously burned.
The day that scarred him, both emotionally and physically. The day he willingly sacrificed...her.
"Donovan what are you doing?" Maverick finally pulled himself together. Not even he, the infamous Alpha X, could see though the Director's facade.
Donovan ignored his twin and slowly leaned into his ear. He cupped his hands and whispered. The Devil widened his eyes. He staggeringly stood up and backed up a few steps, not minding the people behind him. A guard had to catch the Director's arm to prevent him from stumbling.
An animalistic growl erupted from his throat. His eyes burned with fury.
"You showed me." Donovan said simply answering the silent question, then he smiled. A smile too sinister for a child. "I can help you forget, make it all go away. In exchange for my baby brother, of course."
The Director glared, not saying anything. Maverick still was thoroughly confused and seeing his twin act this way scared him.
"Or I can make you forget everything." Donovan's sinister smirk deepened. "A person is nothing without their memories, am I right?"
"Donovan! What's going on?" Maverick was by his little brother's side in a second. He violently shook Donovan's arm, immediately causing a bruise to form where his wrist was. Donovan winced but other than that he paid no attention to the pain.
"I'm glad you sent Maverick up." Donovan gave a short laugh, as though mocking the Director for his stupidity. If he wanted full control over the Alpha X, then his precious soldier should never have met his twin. "I never would have found out if you didn't…" He looked at him tauntingly. "You are starting to forget her name aren't you?"
A horrified look gave the omega his answer.
"It only gets worse the more you think about it. The more you try to remember, the more you forget." Donovan cradled his now bruised arm. "Feeling cooperative now?"
The Director looked at Donovan with a storm of fury and nodded. What once was an all powerful Alpha was stripped to the core, showcasing his vulnerability. Those who were present only saw a sad and scarred man. His domineering aura vanished. Gone. No more.
"Thank you." Donovan used his good arm to pull Maverick away, walking briskly. "We'll be on our way now."
-----
Once they rounded the corner, Donovan stopped. He gripped Maverick's hand tighter. His body almost gave out from the exhaustion of his newfound ability. The omega used their connection to show Maverick what he had learned.
Memory control, a specific subdivision of the Alpha X's mind manipulation ability. Maverick himself hadn't found a way to unlock the base ability yet.
Donovan coughed into his arm, blood spattering onto his bruise, making the wound look even more grotesque. The metallic scent filled the air, nauseating the Alpha.
"Looks like it has it's own drawbacks too." Maverick stated, comfortingly rubbing Donovan's back. Eyes looking anywhere but Donovan's arm.
"Too?" Donovan looked up curious, wiping the blood on his pants before swiping at his lips. He let go of his death grip on his bigger brother's hand, the tremors gone. But the exhaustion was evident in his eyes.
"We can talk later." Maverick said reluctantly, knowing what was about to come. Donovan's mission was priority. "But can I say goodbye?"
Donovan frowned. Obviously not liking the idea. What if he changes his mind and refuses to hand his baby brother over to his real family?
"Only for a few minutes. Please." Maverick pleaded.
The omega pursed his bloodied lips, mulling it over before nodding. Maverick smiled, relieved, and they walked-still hand in hand-to where Donovan's brother and Maverick's mate was held captive.
Donovan hadn't noticed, but Maverick's eyes flashed burgundy orange before returning to his usual amber.
