Omegaverse: The Alpha X’s Prey

Chapter 31 - middle ground

"Are you even listening to me?" An irritated voice finally caught Alfie's attention.

The alpha looked around, confused. He is sitting in the shade of their favorite oak tree, their usual spot for lunch. Alfie has no recollection of exiting the work brick school building and walking to this spot.

"What happened today? You've been zoning out. All day actually."

Alfie turned to the voice's owner. Sitting next to him and leisurely leaning against the sturdy trunk is his best friend Edward, or by his nickname Eddie.

Eddie is an omega. A very beautiful one at that. If Alfie didn't have his eyes set on Donovan for as long as he can remember, he is ninety percent sure they would have been something more. Sparkling and mischievious black orbs, a pale complexion, lush black lashes, fiercely defined brows and a glossy wavy black locks which Eddie keeps cropped short. All of that is coupled with seductive pouty lips and a very distinct beauty mark.

"Em, just the usual." Alfie turned and smiled and tried to change the subject. "About that end of year project-"

Eddie placed a nimble and equally pale finger on Alfie's lips, quieting him.

"Don't go changing the subject on me. I know there's something bothering you Ally." Eddie's normally playful eyes were comforting as he implored the alpha to confide in him. To trust him.

Alfie turned away, Eddie's finger dropped into his ŀȧp. The omega's eyes were filled with disappointment and hurt, he knows what this alpha is going to bring up. He's thinking about him isn't he?

His beloved older brother, Donovan.

"I keep getting my hopes up…" Alfie's voice cracked. He cleared his throat before continuing on, his voice strained. "And then reality pierces my heart and reminds me."

"What? That he has a boyfriend or that he's your older brother?" Eddie couldn't help the bitter jealousy in his voice. Of all people to capture his heart, it had to Alfie. The boy who is infatuated with his blood sibling.

"I don't care we're bothers." Alfie stubbornly rebutted. Love is love, blood shouldn't get in the way of that. The alpha has long accepted that he is in love with his brother, and embraces it wholeheartedly.

"He has a boyfriend." Eddie reminded, gently this time. Gingerly he got up to sit closer to Alfie, putting his arms around the alpha's broad shoulders comfortingly. "You should learn when to give up."

Give up on Donovan and look at me. I'm right here.

Alfie didn't move. Both his face and body were stony as stubborn tears trickled down his face. Eddie made sure to wipe every one away until he stopped crying.

The pair don't know how much they could take, continuing on like this. Both want to end their unrequited love. End their heart wrenching pain. End their tears. End the stubborn hope.

"I try." Alfie spoke in a bȧrėly audible whisper. "Every day I try to move on. But it's so fuċkɨnġ hard."

Ever since Mark came into the picture, and Alfie saw just how happy Donovan was around him. Smiling in a way he never did with him. He wants to give up on his feelings.

Eddie understands how he feels. Everyday there's always an Alpha or Beta Dominant openly confessing their feelings for him. And every time, Eddie turns them down.

Why?

Because they're not Alfie.

Big, dumb, goofy, Alfie. Alfie who is always so optimistic about the future, who can always brighten Eddie's mood even on the darkest days.

"I know." Eddie whispered back. Tears prickling at the corner of his eyes.

In this society, finding your bond or fated mate is the highlight of your life. Everyone wants a special someone who loves them as much as they do. Everyone wants a special someone to spoil rotten. Every wants a special someone. Period.

As one grows older with age and still hasn't found their special someone, the emptiness in their hearts grows along with them. Consumes them, maddens them. Makes them desperate. Most unfortunately live very short lives, never making it past their sixties.

The bell rung and the two awkwardly untangled themselves from each other, before prying eyes could see them.

"I'll be going to class now." Eddie is blushing to the tips of his ears.

Alfie blushed with him, out of embarrassment. He keeps forgetting that Eddie has feelings for him.

"Right." Alfie's eyes looking everywhere but at Eddie.

"So your house right?" Eddie changed the subject as they walked into the building.

"What?" Alfie's blush deepened.

"I'm talking about the end of year project babe." Eddie's flirty nature rose. "What was that pervy mind of yours thinking? Hmm?"

"Right because I'm just as dirty minded like you." Alfie sarcastically retorted, relieved. The two shared a short laugh, though when the laughter subsided it became awkward.

Some things are just not meant to be brought up. And the dynamic of Alfie's and Eddie's relationship is one of them. One wants more than the other can give, yet they still try to find middle ground.

If it even exists at all.
