Omegaverse: The Alpha X’s Prey

Chapter 32 - no matter the cost

Oaks' Residence

Gabrielle was more than surprised to see a panic stricken Mark bursting loudly through the door, carrying a pale Donovan in his arms.

"Emergency!" Mark yelled as he stormed in like a wild boar.

Gabrielle immediately set to work. A flurry of wooden kitchen cabinets were opened and slammed as she fumbled around looking for the right supplies as Mark gently set Donovan on the living room couch.

She right away noticed there was no bleeding or heat pheromones present, so stitches, gauze and heat medication were out. Donovan was sweating, shivering, pale…

A fever?

Moments later there was cold medication, ibuprofen, an iv drip, and a bucket filled with towels in Gabrielle's arms. She was a bit doubtful of Donovan's condition. He left this morning in full health, and hardly ever gets sick aside from his monthly heats.

It also was suspicious that of all days he'd be sick on Easton's eighteenth birthday. No it didn't matter that it was Easton's eighteenth birthday. Just his birthday in general.

"What happened?" Gabrielle demanded as she set up the iv stand.

Mark had no idea how to answer her. Donovan didn't prepare a cover story. Just randomly drank an experimental and very dangerous solution. All because of "we need to go".

"I honestly don't know." Mark decided to be honest because he is horrible at making up stories. That and Gabrielle had a keen sense for sniffing out fibs.

"I need better than 'I don't know'." Gabrielle snapped. She shooed the useless beta into the kitchen with arms full of towels to rinse under water. She kept the bucket nearby just in case. The creamy carpet has recently been shampooed.

"Here," Mark interrupted Gabrielle's thoughts. The silly boy brought back sopping wet towels, and they were dripping everywhere. Even the front of Mark's uniform white polo was soaked.

She decided to hold back her snarky remarks regarding the wet towels. More tension is the least thing the two of them need at the moment.

"How long has he been like this?"

"Not long." Mark averted his gaze, busying himself making the unconscious omega more comfortable by rearranging the pillows and whatnot.

"Not long how long?" Gabrielle was on her last thread of patience with this boy. She can't believe he is a graduate school student majoring in chemistry, aspiring to be a scientist similar to Iris. How could his answers be so vague?

"Less than an hour, it was worse earlier." Mark decided to mention the latter because there is a forty percent chance that Donovan's body would combat the Anti-X solution. As for everything else in that vial… Mark could only hope that in the worst case scenario Donovan would be hospitalized for a long, long time.

"Did something happen at the class lab?" Colds gradually get worse, then die down. Plus the fact that both boys work with hazardous daily could be a contribution to Donovan's health. Or could it be related to that…?

As Gabrielle gingerly wiped Donovan's forehead with a towel, her eyes watched for a sign of transformation. The wolf she saw eighteen years ago, today. Although Donovan has no recollection of the night at all, she still keeps him at an arms' length. Even going as far as to keep tabs on him.

One could never be too careful around a monster. Gabrielle lived her life around the saying "better safe than sorry".

"I don't think so." It's true that nothing happened at the classroom lab. The abandoned underground lab however…

It's not lying if you're withholding information. It's just… keeping quiet.

"Alright. I'll let Iris have a look at him." Gabrielle could only update her mate on the current situation at hand. It's the most she can do with such little information.

Both Mark and Gabrielle failed to notice Donovan's hair move slightly, as though a hand was rubbing his head affectionately. Then the front door silently opened and closed.

Donovan's eyes cracked open, the feeling of relief washed comfortably over him. Both from Maverick's leave and the effects of the green solution lessoned greatly. In his heart, he thanks his brother for lending a helping hand, but that won't change anything. He will still go through with his plans tonight.

No matter the cost.
