Reincarnated As A Chameleon And Eating Everything To Evolve
Chapter 165 - Fourth Evolution! (4)
Although Matthew had added the spider silk glands onto his wrists, it doesn't mean that the silk will be able to come out of his wrists if there's no hole where the silk could come out from. So Matthew added 2 micro holes on each of his wrists to enable the spider's silk to come out. And it didn't cost him any bionutrients since he could just ask the system to modify his body slightly just like when he changed the size of his wolf head or changed his skeleton structure from a quadruped to a biped.
The spider's silk glands were a nice addition, but his body modification has just started and it's still far from being done.
Matthew then nodded in satisfaction before moving on to the next spider body part that he wanted to add to his body. This certain spider body part was just newly added to his body modification plan since he had just thought of this in his fight against the troll mage that used earth magic to summon earth spikes and earth walls from the ground out of nowhere.
And it would be almost impossible for Matthew to sense where the earth constructs will pop up from if not for the fact that his enhanced senses could give him a vague idea where they would come out from based on the slight vibrations on the ground that appear right before the earth moved out of the ground.
Matthew didn't even know the name of the spider body part that he wanted to add, but he knew that the spiders had them from biology class 101. The spiders could feel the tiniest bit of vibration on their web and Matthew guessed that the spiders had the ability to do so not because they have magic or aura. If the spiders back on earth had that ability, that must've been because of a certain organ in their body.
Even though Matthew didn't know the name of the organ and can't possibly try out every weird-sounding organ on the wandering spider's list, he could ask someone that knows everything.
'System, do you know what organ or body parts the spider used to sense vibrations from their legs?'
[Spider's lyriform organ or lyriform slits sense organs (LSSO) are a precise ȧssembly of stress detecting cuticular slits found in the wandering spider's appendages that enabled the wandering spider to detect vibrations.]
'Yes! That one! Can you please add them all to my limbs? Both arms and legs!'
Although Matthew was now a biped and his legs were the only limbs that had constant contact with the ground, Matthew still decided to add them to his hands just in case he needed all four limbs to sense incredibly faint vibrations in the future. Who knows what would've happened in the future? Even if he needed to spend more bionutrients for it, it's basically an investment for himself, so Matthew didn't really feel bad for it.
Matthew then saw the list scrolled on its own before stopping at an organ called 'Lyriform Organ'. The system then automatically added 4 of them, to put on each of Matthew's limbs. 2 on his hands, near his wrists while the other two were put in his legs, near his ankles. And seeing the cost of bionutrients is only 65 bionutrients each, Matthew sighed in relief and calmed his mind down who had already prepared to spend a large number of bionutrients for this upgrade beforehand.
'If it's only for that much then I've prepared myself for nothing.' He thought while patting his own ċhėst.
That's initially all the things that Matthew had planned to add to his body before, but when he remembered that he will be adding another major upgrade to his body that might possibly cause his body weight to grow heavier, Matthew thought that there was another spider body part that he needed to add so that he could still nimbly climbs on things.
And with this new spider body part, even Matthew would be able to climb on walls or attach himself to the ceiling if he ever met one. Matthew tried searching for the organ himself but realized that he didn't know the name and asked the system once again.
[Spider's Setules, micro hairs that give the wandering spider superior climbing ability.]
'Please add that to my palms and the bottom of my feet!'
Spending another 160 bionutrients, Matthew now had spider setules on his palms and feet that enabled him to climb smooth and even surfaces. The forest might not be a place where there are a lot of smooth and even surfaces, but it would greatly boost his climbing ability and just in case he needed it in the future, Matthew could also climb up castle walls or the ceiling of a house.
And after adding the spider's setules, Matthew finally had all the spider body parts that he wanted and moved on to the next beast on the available monster data list.
Matthew had contemplated a few times already whether he should add a deer's antlers or a boar's tusk to his face so that he could also use his head to headbutt his enemy if his limbs happened to be occupied by something else.
But in the end, he decided to pass on it since he still thought that it might affect his agility when jumping high on the trees and it would also give his opponent more surface area to attack his body since sizeable antlers or tusk on the face will be quite an easy target if Matthew wasn't used to having them in the first place.
And he was also considering the toughness of his antlers or tusk if he just added them now. With his enemies that got stronger and stronger the more he got into the forest, Matthew didn't trust his newly added antlers or tusks would be helpful enough to block against those creatures' attacks. What if he got an equivalent of level 5 deer's antlers if he just added them now? He would just be wasting his bionutrients. It might be possible if he had added them from the start just like his venom glands so that they could evolve and get a major qualitative upgrade after the +3 upgrade. But it was too late now, so he skipped on that and moved on to the other beasts on the list.
The wolves are known for their superior sense of smell, hearing, and night vision and Matthew had literally transplanted the whole wolf's head except for the eyes to his own head. He even manually added the wolf's body part that was responsible for giving the wolves their night vision onto his own chameleon eyes, enabling him to still get a 360 degrees vision while having a night vision added to it.
And aside from their claws, Matthew didn't know whether their other body parts would be useful for him since he already had his original chameleon organs. But one of those organs will be replaced today as Matthew already had some ideas to change that certain body part because it will probably enhance one of his current abilities. However, he saved that for later as the creature that had it is still down on the list of the available monster data.
Matthew then continued to scroll down the list until he found something else that caught his own eyes besides the initial body parts that he had already planned to add before, and he finally stopped at the monkey's body parts list.
He already had the monkey's limbs and the monkey's strength comes from their sheer number of monkeys in a group. So, what would have caught Matthew's interest?
The answer was their tails. Matthew didn't really want to change his current tail with the macaque monkey's tail since their tails are not that long either compared to his own tail. However, what made Matthew stop scrolling and stared at the monkey's tail was because it made him think about what contribution his tail has made so far for himself.
And after thinking and racking his brain trying to recall if it had done something important or not, nothing came to his mind.
'Is my tail useless then?'
Matthew didn't know how other chameleons use their tail, but even when he was still a quadruped walking on four legs, he didn't remember ever thinking that his tail was useful for him. It might help him retain his body balance just like any other tails do, but Matthew realized that he had the special evolution function. He then thought about whether he can change his tail into something that was more useful other than just helping to balance his body.
The crocodiles were able to use their tail as a whip, but having a rigid and massive tail would be a huge blow to Matthew's ability, so he had to abandon that idea since he depended a lot on his agility and maneuverability.
The deer's, wolf's, and the boar's tail were just simply there and also didn't have much use, but Matthew hadn't given up yet and continued scrolling the list.
Then he finally stumbled upon the idea.
'Didn't I have monster data of a tail that was not as thick as the crocodile's tail, yet had a lot of strength. It was also long and flexible, it could surely grab onto things and even possibly hold on against my own body weight. Maybe if I was good enough in controlling it and covered the tail's surface with the crocodile scutes, then I can make the tail work similar to a blunt weapon…'
'It might look quite horrifying but it would probably be worth it… And who would have cared for my appearance anyway? I'm going to get it.'
Matthew then scrolled through the snake's body parts list and added the middle body part of the snake up to its tail onto his own body.
