The Emperor’s Angel of Death
#3085 - Knight's Fall
"What's the situation in the city?"
Harlowin's voice was the first to be heard. His knight had suffered considerable damage in the previous battle, and after emergency repairs, it could only barely fight, but it couldn't engage in close combat and could only provide remote support.
"Listening to the briefing... it seems there's a riot by the rabble."
Another person answered Harlowin, followed by a contemptuous voice.
"These lowlifes are good for nothing. What else can they do besides complain and cause trouble? We're still too merciful. We should chain them all up."
This remark caused a burst of laughter. The battles had made the knights grow, but they hadn't changed their attitude towards ordinary people. In fact, it had become even worse, because after witnessing the performance of the militia, they were even more convinced that these inferiors were useless except as cannon fodder to be sent to their deaths.
Of course, Serre didn't agree with this attitude, but he couldn't change the others.
Soon, the gun line arrived at the location that needed support, and what came into view was an already intense battlefield.
The militia and auxiliary troops were fighting bloody battles with those small creatures. Two lines of defense had already been breached, but even the strongholds that were surrounded were still holding on. Tanks and armored vehicles were engaging in bold close combat with the serpentine monsters and various large creatures emerging from the ground caves. And in the most intense part of the battle, Space Marines in power armor were fighting the most terrifying monsters. The reaction speed of these monsters was almost on par with that of these most agile human warriors.
Of course, it was only almost. They were still dying in droves under the blades and bolters of the Space Marines.
But the defense line was still being rapidly destroyed. What caused all this was what Serre least wanted to see.
"Stay alert! The Hive Tyrant is preparing to force a breakthrough!"
In the toxic fog, a moving hill loomed. At its feet were several huge Doom of Malan'tai, and many large serpentine creatures followed behind. In the center of the swarm was the towering Hive Tyrant, which concentrated the dispersed attention of the Hive Mind, coordinating the surrounding troops. And above the Hive Tyrant's head was a chaotic cloud composed of wings and claws, blocking attacks from the sky.
The Space Marines' powerful super-heavy tanks repeatedly charged around the cluster led by the Hive Tyrant, killing many bugs, but their numbers were so great that the valiant fighting of the Rampagers and the Sicaran Squad only left small marks in the swarm.
"Knights, fire directly at the leaders of the swarm and the Hive Tyrant! They must not pass through here! Reinforcements will arrive soon."
Bahram's steady voice directly cut into the channel. Serre noticed that another gun line had also arrived here to provide support, so he dutifully used the weapons on his arms to sweep fire at the swarm.
But due to the height, most of his firepower was blocked by the Hive Tyrant's carapace, but some of it did hit the target successfully, but it was useless.
The knights' weapons could hardly harm this behemoth, so they turned to attack the swarm below the Hive Tyrant, and the Preceptor Knights in charge of the two gun lines raised their fully charged laser destructors.
The next second, two beams of lasers hit the Hive Tyrant's lower abdomen and lower jaw almost simultaneously. The bio-titan roared, aiming its arm cannons at the Preceptor Knights. Although they moved in time, the right side of the Preceptor Knights' bodies still emitted corrosive gas, which led to damage to the transmission and they could only stagger backward.
"Keep attacking!"
The Preceptor Knight in the channel gasped through gritted teeth.
"Children of Dupondlin! Do not fear death!"
The old knight roared and continued to fire at the Hive Tyrant. Serre immediately joined in, hoping to divert the Hive Tyrant's attention.
In the distance, the deployed Stormblade super-heavy tanks completed their aiming calibration, and then the plasma blastgun emitted a shriek, and the surrounding air rippled with the activation of the weapon.
During the Great Maelstrom Expedition, Sothar had obtained 20 Stormblade tanks from Ryza, and subsequent orders had been added, but these equipment were too precious and troublesome to use, and most of the time they were gathering dust in the warehouse. This time against the Tyranids, it could be said that the Astral Knights had taken out most of their hidden treasures, but even so, the small number of Stormblades could only be deployed in a dispersed manner to take care of the defenses of various cities, and Bahram only had three to command.
And the most troublesome thing about using it was that the range of the plasma blastgun was not very far, which meant that the Stormblade needed to risk fighting enemy titans at medium range, which made it more dependent on friendly units to attract and delay enemy titans.
Therefore, Bahram had brought in the knights.
Two scorching high-energy plasma streams shattered the bio-titan's bone armor upon contact, and thick blood gushed out from its side. The Hive Tyrant then let out a terrible scream. At the same time, the Preceptor Knight completed the second attack, and the laser hit the Hive Tyrant's wound, tearing it deeper and larger. Fatally wounded, the creature lunged forward, and the arm cannon spewed out a thick acidic substance.
The torrent of corrosive material engulfed the Preceptor Knight's left leg and left arm. The laser destructor also fell from his arm, and the Preceptor Knight fell to the ground.
"Go save Preceptor Vicker!"
Seeing that the old knight was in danger, Serre roared and took the lead, while the avenger gatling cannon in his hand continued to fire, pounding the Tyranid creatures trying to approach the knight, tearing them to pieces.
Then came the second whistling sound, and the second Stormblade fired. This strike almost destroyed the Hive Tyrant's head, but it was so focused on its prey that it even ignored its own death.
With a final scream, it desperately stepped out its forelimbs and pierced the Preceptor Knight's chest. The knight mech's arm twitched once, then remained motionless, and the Hive Tyrant's corpse then fell heavily, crushing the entire knight mech.
"No!"
Looking at the dimmed identifier, all the knights in the gun line either roared or screamed.
But soon, they felt the ground still shaking.
Still immersed in sorrow and shock, Serre raised his head and saw another towering thing coming through the fog.
"There's another one!"
"No! There are two!"
Thousands of meters away, another behemoth also crashed through the toxic fog, walking towards the defense line with steps of destruction.
Serre clenched his fists. During his military service away from his parents, the Preceptor Knight had actually served as their father. Even though his status was actually lower than theirs, his serious and lively style was very popular with everyone, and he rarely put on the airs of an older generation.
And what others didn't know was that the old knight paid special attention to and cared for Serre, often giving him one-on-one training and tutoring in private, and also told him many things he had seen and heard. Serre knew why, this old grandee's personal guard had always been loyal to the true bloodline of Dupondlin, so his fall made Serre even more angry and sad.
